Book Description

7 Mar 2010
Within the pages of this convenient source, woodworkers will learn the art of relief carving, which gives the illusion of depth, through projects on wild creatures. An in-depth introduction teaches novice carvers basic techniques, such as choosing wood and transferring a pattern while intermediate and experienced carvers will appreciate a section devoted to advanced techniques, such as undercutting for depth and creating free-floating areas within a carving. Step-by-step line drawings are included for each project, with shaded patterns illustrating depth and shadow. Genre-specific techniques for wildlife creatures are given exclusive study in this resource and include difficult detailing elements such as creating facial features, and texturing fur, hai, and feathers. More than 60 patterns, including 15 new projects for creating fighting buck, mule deer, elk and fish, will provide skilled hands with many new challenges. Additionally, woodcarvers will learn how to add finishing details to their projects with woodburning, Danish oil, and paint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love upon receipt! 22 Feb 2008
By Ceramic Dabbler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I love this book. It has a beautiful gallery of pictures and instructions to help the crafter improve their craft. The projects in the book are animals and scenery, but with a little imagination you will be able to learn and transfer the skill to any art form.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wildlife Carving in Relief, Second Edition Revised and Expanded: Carving Techniques and Patterns 6 Feb 2010
By C - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Very Nice book. Great patterns & ideas. This is one of my firts books for carving and there is a lot of information in it, about what tools to use for what and which woods are good for carving. And the patterns copy nice and can be used for more then just carving like pyrography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wildlife Carving in Relief 12 July 2007

Format:Paperback
Lora Irish puts forth in amazing detail relief carving using hand tools. The book is well worth the purchase price for the artwork alone, her teaching is masterful.

1.0 out of 5 stars Know what you are getting 22 April 2010
By Charlier - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Based on the table of contents shown and the few pictures of the "cutting depths" for the buffalo, I thought this book would go into more detail about depths. WRONG!!! The line pictures and shaded pictures are good IF you can visualize how to layer your cuts.

I am extremely disappointed in my purchase but won't send it back to Amazon as they did nothing wrong. I know I will never purchase another Lora S. Irish book on carving unless I can actually see what is in the book first.

If you have the talent to know what areas should be cut to what depth, then I guess the pictures are worth it. BUT if you are a beginner looking for a HOW TO book on relief carving this certainly is not it.

I will put this on eBay to get rid of it and try to recoup some of my wasted money.
