Product Description

Wildflowers of Terezin is a sweeping historical novel set against a backdrop of danger. A Danish Lutheran pastor’s complacent faith is stretched to the breaking point during World War II when he meets a young Jewish nurse Hanne Abrahamsen and becomes deeply involved in Resistance efforts to save Denmark’s Jews from the Nazi prison camp at Terezin, Czechoslovakia—also known as Theresienstadt.

Challenged by his evangelical brother and swayed by his own attraction to Hanne, Pastor Steffen abandons his formerly quiet, uninvolved life and hesitantly volunteers to help smuggle Denmark’s Jews out of the country before a Nazi roundup. Steffen finds that helping his Jewish neighbors is the most decent, spiritual thing he has ever done. As he actually does God’s work, rather than just talking about it, Steffen’s faith deepens and he takes greater risks in his sermons.

When things go terribly wrong and Hanne is sent to Terezin, Steffen finds his heart fully engaged. He undertakes protests and rescues that are more and more dangerous, never imagining where it will lead him, or the ultimate cost of his decision to get directly involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Surprising but Inspiring Read 19 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
What would you do if you were a pastor in Denmark during WWII? The Nazis are occupying your country and intimidating your people. And you have a chance encounter with a young nurse who thinks you're a member of The Underground and turns to you for help ...

I knew I wanted to read "Wildflowers of Terezin" as soon as I heard about it - simply because Robert Elmer is one of my favourite authors. And from the first word, "Wildflowers of Terezin" grabbed my heart and pulled me into the world of Hanne and Steffen.

Perhaps I ought to identify with Hanne - her courage and humour are inspiring! But it's Steffen I find myself identifying with again and again - Steffen who isn't a fearless hero who enjoys dancing with danger ... and, indeed, provokes a number of responses from those closest to his heart as he first avoids, then confronts and finally embraces danger. The first time I read the book, I was disappointed that Steffen wasn't brave and fearless. But subsequent readings have revealed a man who WANTS to do the right thing and please God, but is ... human. He has doubts and fears. Failures too. Ultimately he proves himself courageous and gains the victory - but not the sort of victory I, for one, expected.

"Wildflowers of Terezin" is beautifully written. It's thought-provoking at a deep level. And it's honest about the challenges people like Hanne and Steffen faced - honest WITHOUT being "gross". It's surprising. And, most of all, it's inspiring - the book rings with conviction ... and a call to courage in the face of the ultimate sacrifice.

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book! 10 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's a novel, of course, but based on the true events in Denmark during the WW11 when most of the Danish Jews were smuggled over the water to Sweden. I lived in Denmark for six months during the '60s when these events were much more recent and I remember hearing about it. The main characters are fictional but many of the other participants are drawn from real people and the story of the nurse Hanne and the vicar Steffen is exciting and touching. Apart from some rather strange chapter dividers which happened right in the middle of conversations, this was a well written and gripping book

5.0 out of 5 stars A poignant tale 15 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Wildflowers of Terezin is set in Denmark during the Second World War and tells the story of a Danish Lutheran pastor (Steffen) and young Jewish nurse Hanne.

The book opens with news that the Danish Jews are to be rounded up and sent to concentration camps so the Danish Resistance smuggles as many as they can out to Sweden. Both Steffen and Hanne then become involved in the resistance operation and things go terribly wrong as Steffen is arrested and Hanne is sent to the Nazi prison camp at Terezin, Czechoslovakia--also known as Theresienstadt.

The book is well written and deals well with very uncomfortable subject matter. The characters were well described and the plot was coherent. It is a work of fiction, but in no way trivialises the tremendous bravery shown by ordinary men and women and the terrific sacrifices which were made during the war.

I don't normally read books set in, or around, wars but this was a wonderful read which I'd recommend to anyone.
