Product Description

Review

'The same good strong writing as is evidenced in Under the Hawthorn Tree' (Sunday Tribune )

'As gripping a story as the original, embracing not just a sense of place -- Ireland -- but a sense of time and history Conlon-McKenna has crafted this book ... not a word, spoken or unspoken, or an emotion, is wasted. Pace and style keep the pages turning, and you are filled with a sense of wanting more at the end. Highly recommended.' (Books Ireland )

Format:Paperback
This is the second in a trilogy of books by Marita Conlon McKenna who is an absolutely amazing author! The three books are Irish historical fiction set in the times of the Potato Famine, on Eily, Peggy and Michael, the three children of a famine stricken family. This particular book focuses in on Peggy, the middle child, who decides to emigrate to America. It is a terryfying and depressing journey which causes this book to be about courage, independance and adventure, especially when we read about her life in America. The feelings fron the beginning to the end are so strong that you have to read it to believe it. I adored this book so much but better still, read the whole series because I am sure that many people will agree with me that these three books deserve all the awards they have received!

Enjoyable way for kids to pick up on some of the key feelings and experiences of emmigration - an ongoing part of Irish history. Through the eyes of a young woman they see and feel some of the hardships and lonliness and also the courage and support needed as people establish new lives for themselves away from home.
