This film is actually pretty good. I wouldn't exactly call it a horror, (although I see why it's been lumped into that category), and fans of `Spec-ops' or `survival' flicks will lap this up (no dog pun intended).

What we have is a group of young offenders let out for a boot camp style holiday on a remote Island. What follows is a `Deliverance' style hunt film, with some surprisingly good sequences in it for what one presumes is a low-budget British flick.

Some reviewers say too much was revealed early on - I don't think so - and I actually liked the fact that we're let in on `what's what', as this takes the film away from being a mediocre horror, and took it into a new and terrifying territory - a whole other genre of film: The Hunt.

In my opinion this worked much better and made the film feel much more original. Plus being a fan of all things military, for me it made it much more believable and scary, too. Monsters and ghost I don't believe in - but vengeful, highly trained killers... that's a possibilty.

There were some great action sequences and stunts, and on the whole the acting was pretty good. One or two of the youngsters failed to perform - but this is understandable as they were young, and a lot was being asked of them. All in all though, I found 'Wilderness' to be a pleasant surprise... if 'pleasant' is the right word to use.

The cover advises you: don't go down to the woods today.... I'd agree. I'd say: go down to the shops and pick up a copy of this. 8/10

If this review was helpful to you at all then please give it the thumbs up, and if not, please comment on why below, so I can do a better job for you next time. Thanks :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Nicely Nasty 3 April 2011
By Charles Vasey TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Wilderness takes the slasher theme of naughty teenagers and changes them into nasty young offenders. After bullying another prisoner to death they get to travel to a Scottish island for some survival skills, only to find survive is exactly what they need to do. The identity of the obligatory stalker (complete with John Rambo collection of traps, crossbows and a pack of human-flesh-seeking Alsatians) might have been a mystery to those who slept through the first 20 minutes but just to make certain one of the chacters tells us. The film is not about working out who did it, but rather how can they be stopped.

Although one can spot the likely survivors, the characters are well-played with no maudlin death-bed conversions; the chief bully dying as he lived. The film has a DOG SOLDIERS feel and not just because it has Sean Pertwee.

A guilty pleasure.

A good film essentially; a cast of characters you would be hard pressed to feel any sympathy for but this is not detrimental to the film. A group of young offenders go to a prison service owned remote island, a kind of outdoor team building/boot camp affairs. I did find it a bit unrealistic that half a dozen very dangerous offenders (murderer, bank robber, serial sex offender etc) would just be accompanied by one staff member, but small point.
They meet some females who are basically there for the same reason and the film revolves around an individual with an array of weapons and dogs hunting them down. Strangely I thought, the 'maniac' and his motive are revealed very early on, soon after the first killing which does take some of the suspense and guesswork out of it especially as there were another couple of strands which could have been used to keep the viewer guessing. Very watchable for what it is, has been compared to scum, dog soldiers and Lord of the flies but is not quite as good as any of those.
I would say be wary of another review that reveals the protaganist but it is revealed so prematurely anyway it probably wouldn't matter too much if you found out beforehand. All in all good effects, nothing wrong with the story and acting fine, worth a watch.
