Book Description

3 April 2012
Wolves are curious. They’re curious about people. They take the time to stop and look before going on about their business. Wolves are mythic in their size and beauty and the power they hold over the human psyche. If a wolf takes the trouble to look you in the eyes, you will never forget it. This book shares the author’s personal experiences with wild wolves. The stories are first-hand observations. The pictures and videos were taken at the time. They and the poems record and reflect these encounters. Some people have asked what led me to write Wild Wolf Encounters. Like all creation, it was the result of a struggle. In this case, it was a struggle with myself. About two years ago, in another crisis economic compromise, Congress removed wolves from the protection of the Endangered Species Act. Under this Act, wolves re-introduced into the Rocky Mountain region of the United States had flourished, their numbers increasing to about 1700. Without the Act’s shelter, wolf hunting is now permitted in Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. The stated goal is to reduce wolf population to ~100 individuals per state. That’s a lot of hunting. Animating the hunt is the prevailing idea, nurtured by age-old tales, that wolves are vicious creatures, dangerous to people; that they kill for pleasure; and therefore, that they deserve to be (re-)exterminated, or something close to it, although now it is called “management”. I struggled to find an appropriate response, something I could do besides writing letters and sending e-mails to politicians. And then I realized that what I could do best was to share my own experiences with wolves in the wild. There I find them to be curious about humans, beautiful beyond believing, fascinating in a way that cannot easily be explained, and utterly without threat. Wild Wolf Encounters is my way of undoing, one story and poem at a time, a painful and dangerous myth. Wild Wolf Encounters is appropriate for adults and children. I hope you will enjoy it. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Magical Realm of the Wolf 27 May 2012
By Kaz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Monica Glickman enthrals, amuses and informs as she takes the reader on a wonderful journey into the mystique of the wolf. In engaging and humorous prose, exquisite poetry, and photographs, as well as links to her personal videos, the author paints her encounters with wolves, and other marvellous creatures, while hiking in Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons.

The poetry is sublime: 'Like A Whisper' and 'The Coming' evoke the physical beauty and secretive nature of the wolf, while 'Wolf Dream', 'Power Of Attraction' and 'One Moment More' elicit the sense of a deep and primal connection between wolves and humans. And Monica's passion and awe for the beauty of the wilds is palpable in her suspense-filled tales, and, at times, delightfully wry observations and interjections.

'Wild Wolf Encounters' is beautifully put together and each poem, each vignette, is like a calming meditation at the end of the day. It makes me want to down pens and head for wolf country.
5.0 out of 5 stars Finding peace in the wild 20 May 2012
By Craig - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
When you can't be in Yellowstone, this book reminds you why you need to get back there. It lets you sit back, dream a little, think about wolves, bears, birds, buffalo and elk and remember how the chance to be in the company of such wildness offers some of the most peaceful experiences available anywhere. That this could emerge from a chapter about watching a wolf feasting on a kill may seem odd; but the poetry in this short and simple book combines with the author's photos to make you feel that it's true.
5.0 out of 5 stars Takes us to the wild country with insight and humor 1 May 2012

Not all of us can go to the wild country, but through this book we hear the author's voice, so insightful and often humorous. I loved the descriptions of surprise, and delight at seeing the wolves, hearing the howling (and YES, I loved going on YOU tube to hear the howls, and the wind and the birds while viewing the amazing scenes of grizzly and wolf). The poems take on even more power after reading the prose, because they provide context for the writer's insights and emotions.
