From Amazon.co.uk

The story of a struggling rock band, 1992's Wild West suffered comparisons with The Commitments, which was released the year before. There similarities end, however, since the Honky Tonk Cowboys are made up of four Pakistani brothers from the West London suburb of Southall. There's tumbleweed in the street, saloon doors at home and barroom brawls at the Asian Rising Stars Talent Contest. Eldest brother Zaf (Naveen Andrews) looks the part in a ten-gallon hat and fringe jacket, but the mongrel neighbourhood is a long way from the Nashville the brother's dream about. Dogged by gangland thugs and the well-meant pursuit of traditional values from their poor mother (Lalita Ahmed), they stumble from one danger to another. The worst comes in the form of the beautiful Rifat (Sarita Choudhury), who steals Zaf's heart and the band's hopes of stardom with "Wild West Records". The film was written by then 29-year-old Harwant Bains, who grew up in Southall in a family of Punjabi background. It's clearly a flight of personal fancy rooted in an environment harshly observed. If the petty crime sits uncomfortably with the love story there's always the considerately compiled soundtrack to smooth away the suburb's rough edges. --Paul Tonks

First saw this on television. Have bought several copies for family members living in the Antipodes who love it.
Well worth a viewing if you have not seen it already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! 11 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
I have seen this film more times than I care to remember and I think it's awesome! There have been many East-Meets-West films before and since, however, Wild West takes a completely unsual, yet plausible angle. It's hilariously funny but makes some serious comments on the difficulties of growing up in a single parent family and being Asian. Its amalgumation of cultures: Asian and British bound together by Country music and the cowboy culture is extremely cleverly done. I've never really been into country music but the music in this film is fantastic! The characters in the Wild West are played brilliantly and I can't imagine that any other actors would have done the roles justice! A truely awesome film!

4.0 out of 5 stars what a treat... 14 Mar 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
what an absolute, tasty little treat. its smart, funny, and sometimes wonderfully crude. though sarita choudhury is billed first on most reviews & press, naveen andrews steals the show--its his film, all the way. and hes utterly beautiful--again, even as a citified drugstore cowboy. this movie abounds w/ exceedingly bad hats & seedy western wear, and "dude" is said a few too many times; but it seems that attwood is using these devices as affect, not as a british understanding of country music & its culture, but rather, as a way to contrast southall & londons tightly packed markets with the big sky & wide open places so revered in country. here, in _wild west_, you even find cheatin', drinkin', love for mama, & a porch-dog (whos a little star in his own right), as well as intersting use of the word "redneck." thanks to the (wonderful) exploitation of that nebulous musical genre known as "alternative country," _wild west_ maintains a refreshing obscurity (contrary to the above review, there is, thank god, no garth brooks on the soundtrack). the only morsel missing is willie nelsons "mamas, dont let your babies grow up to be cowboys," which would have said it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute movie... 18 Dec 2011

This movie is kind of cute. I bought it because I like any movie with Naveen Andrews in it. I still have a VHS player, so this movie works fine for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Duo brings sounds of love to airy folk creations 10 Oct 1999
By Joel Finkelstein (joel@olg.com) - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Independent songsmiths offer what those who have gone on to record with big name studios cannot. Namely, music that sounds almost live and true to the performing arts. That has never been more truer than with the ruminators who vocals, harmonies and hooks need no production value to sound good. This is contempory folk on the lighter side. Mostly rousing balads and songs of new-found love, there is much to spur you on to a better mood. Listen and enjoy.
