Product Description

A haunting, poetic exploration of relationships from the director of Presque Rien'. Exquisite cinematography by Agnes Godard; original music by Jocelyn Pook, and "I Fell in Love With a Dead Boy" performed by Antony Hegarty. Stephanie, Mikhail and Jamel are loners who live on the seedy side of life in Paris using their bodies to turn tricks. Whilst battling with their own inner demons they also find solace in each others arms. When Stephanie receives a phone call to say her mother is terminally ill the three lovers go to Stephanie's village deep in rural France. Once there, she begins to unravel some of the childhood events that have made her the person she is today.

I thought this film was beautifully made. However, the finest scenes are interspersed with some long, fairly slow parts, with lots of meaningful glances and very little happening. When things do happen, they really do happen though. There are some pretty strong sex scenes which I personally enjoyed because I found them realistic rather than "manufactured". The Director also took his cameras out into the Bois de Boulogne in Paris and filmed scenes that I have never seen any other film show, of the transsexual prostitutes who work the "Bois" at night.

Stephanie is a transsexual. That is no secret right from the start of the film. I watched the film with my girlfriend, who is also a transsexual, and she found Stephanie sympathetic and convincing. Need I say more?

So, slow in places but hang on in there. It is ultimately a rewarding film and some of the images will stay in your mind for a long time afterwards. I will watch it again and again.

Magnificent Film 30 May 2007
By Aminata
Format:DVD
Absolutely wonderful film, the transexual for once is played by a real life transexual. This makes all the difference as her credibility is never in doubt and her acting is simply outstanding.

Beautiful bittersweet story of love surrounded by a sea of squaller and human degradation.

There is no other film that comes near it on these issues believe me, highly, highly recommended by myself a transexual.

It's rare to see a film in which the characters, of any sexuality, actually seem that they are in love with each other. That's beautifully done here.

Contrary to one of the other reviews, I found the pacing of the film just right: yes, not a lot happens, but it doesn't need to. I can't think of anything to criticise except maybe that it's a pity the "deleted scenes" on the DVD couldn't be included. Highly recommended.

Don't miss the interview with the director.
