Book Description

2007
"Wild Seas, Secret Shores of Africa" is an underwater journey around the African coast, richly portrayed in more than 145 photographs that draw the reader into a breathtakingly beautiful and sometimes strange underwater world. Offering a worthy and exciting alternative to the continent's more familiar terrestrial landscapes and wildlife, this photographic essay not only covers all major marine habitats, from kelp forests to coral reefs, but also features a wide range of marine species in action, from iconic apex predators such as great white and tiger sharks, whales and dolphins, to many of the lesser known but equally fascinating creatures such as jellyfish and starfish. The images in this book were chosen out of tens of thousands, for their ability to transport the viewer right into the heart of the ocean. Each photograph tells a story, unearths a bizarre marine creature or provides a detailed and fresh look at a familiar subject; together they make a resounding statement for marine conservation.

Wild Seas Secret Shores of Africa is a breath of fresh air in the genera of underwater photography coffee table books. In the tradition of classics such as David Doubilet's Light in the Sea, Christopher Newbert's Within a Rainbowed Sea and Bill Curtsinger's Extreme Nature, Thomas Peschak has managed to created a uniquely fresh view of the underwater world. From extreme close up wide angle shots of bronze whaler sharks and bryde's whales feasting on sardines to portraits of alien and bizarre looking jellfyish and other planktonic life of the open ocean, Wild Seas Secrete Shores is a collection of images that sets a new standard in underwater photography. It is also good to see that Peschak's topside/land photography is every bit as good as his underwater work with images of wildebeest crossing beaches, penguins fighting with rabbits and white sharks tracking kayaks being my standout favorites. He also writes well, and in 6 well crafted essays Peschak, also a marine biologist, uncovers the natural history of Africa's oceans. Another treat is a 30 page section at the end of the book which describes in some detail how each of the photographs was taken. Not just the technical data but also revealing and sometimes funny behind the scenes accounts and stories. Without doubt the best book in its genera to be published for quite a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational 21 Dec 2012

Thomas' images both in this book and others I have seen published and exhibited are simply stunning.

These images take me back to my childhood snorkeling and diving in the amazing waters of the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. They also remind me of 3 months spent in the Quirimbas Archipelago (N Mozambique) in 1996 where I met Thomas as a young undergraduate Marine Biologist. He was a driven and inspirational man even then and I am so pleased that he manages to portray his passion so successfully.

Buy his books if you love the oceans - you will not regret it.

Thomas Peschak is one of the great marine photographers (and marine biologists specializing in South African wildlife) and this new book: Wild Seas, Secret Shores of Africa, is a great addition to an already impressive body of work. Highly recommended.
