5.0 out of 5 stars Practical, inspirational and a great read 1 May 2014
By dprs
Format:Paperback
Just love this book! Very beautiful to look through (loads of photos) and broken down by 50 area chapters (e.g. The South Downs, Worcestershire and Malvern Hills etc) covering all the UK, and plenty near London. There's lovely first person description of the thrills of running in wild moor, across mountains, through ancient forest, some personal and funny stuff too. There's also lots about the history of running in each area and the first races, but also the geology and the terrain, what to expect, what to see. The routes seem to pick fairly well known trails and I think the aim is to include classic routes which are easy to follow and with good terrain. Directions are pretty short, but had a look at the online support and there are OS maps and downloadable route cards to accompany, plus there are small overview maps of each route in the back for planning. I'm less interested in the routes to be honest, but they look like good ones if you needed inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such an inspiring book 1 May 2014
Format:Paperback
Wild Running is a book that eschews all of the cliques that you can often get in books and articles about running. It is so accessible, with a relaxed and engaging writing style that will appeal to all standards of runner. It's also impossible not to feel inspired by this book, and want to promptly throw on some grubby old trainers and run through a river or ascend a ruddy great hill. I live in Swansea and while I'm a regular visitor to Gower, it hadn't crossed my mind to tackle it with anything other than a leisurely stroll. I have now run the clearly (and eloquently) described routes detailed in the book, and what is more by getting out there I have discovered other routes and thoroughly exapnded my running horizons. I really cannot recommend this book enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring and interesting read 1 May 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I live in Birmingham so you may think wild running isn't exactly on my doorstep, but the route descriptions and photos in this book make it impossible to avoid giving it a go. In walking, camping and adventure books there is often a gaping void over the Midlands-nothing of beauty or interest to visit here (unless you're interested in transport or industrial history...) Or so people think. Wild Running appreciates the stunning countryside and stately homes the Midlands has to offer. They're beautiful routes to run and read about alike-they're even great for walking. Really recommend this book-wherever you live!

5.0 out of 5 stars and enjoy exploring the British countryside 14 July 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is exactly what I was looking for: a resource to take you from the novice to the experienced stages of trail and fell running. The navigation and route descriptions are very brief, so in the early stages, don't expect to do a run without a couple of wrong turns, but you can't expect endless descriptions, and the electronic map and GPS resources are really valuable. If you own a pair of trainers, and enjoy exploring the British countryside, then buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational! 1 May 2014
Format:Paperback
I love running but sometimes find i'm bored with the same old routes. This book has already inspired me to get out and explore some more of our country's fantastic countryside. Lots of good photographs add to the appeal of the routes and excellent first-hand descriptions show how far the author's have gone to personally showcase these fine adventures. The guide is broken down into different areas and the runs cover a wide range of distances through to the 'Ultra' range so there is something for everyone from those like me just venturing into trail running to the hardened fell runner.
