Product Description

BBC Review

Kool and the Gang did not hit the UK charts until the tail end of 1979 with their Deodato-produced single Ladies Night. However, the soul brethren in the know had rocked to them some six years previously. One of the most appropriately titled records ever, Wild And Peaceful, was New Jersey funkers Kool and the Gang's sixth release and fourth studio album. For many, it remains their greatest work.

The Gang redefined the word 'swagger' with their bouncy, ebullient sound, influenced by Manu Dibango's African classic Soul Makossa, the album contains three of their best-known hits - Funky Stuff, Jungle Boogie and Hollywood Swinging.

Heaven At Once is a spoken-word call and response between Robert 'Kool' Bell and his youngest brother, Rory. It's probably - and, bearing in mind the embarrassment of riches this album contains - its greatest track. It's like breathing in fresh air on a beautiful summer's morning. Kool lays out the group's manifesto: ''We are scientists of sound, we are mathematically putting it down''. It's not just the soul boys that were listening, the horn riffs are like something from a later Van Morrison record. The slow-building title track, graced by DT's flute, is another stand-out.

Hollywood Swinging packs appropriate punch and became a favourite of the brit-funkers. Jungle Boogie demonstrated the exceptionally tight groove of bassist 'Kool'' and drummer 'Funky' George Brown. Quentin Tarantino made it the main title theme of Pulp Fiction in 1995 and the world suddenly realised that Kool and The Gang had a previous life than their Celebration hit-making years.

Wild And Peaceful defined the early years of Kool and the Gang and gave them great commercial success in the US. It reached the Top 10 in the US R&B charts and went Top 40 pop. If you only know their later years, this album, as with a great deal of their early work, is a different - and equally enjoyable - proposition. --Daryl Easlea

4.0 out of 5 stars Their best Funk album 9 Dec 2006
By Andy Edwards TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
If you have any interest in Soul, Funk or 70's music in general you will know "Jungle Boogie", the most succesful single Kool enjoyed prior to their descent into the Pop morass. That it is representative of this album probably tells you all you need to know - this is from the days when Kool were a street funk outfit.

Kool and the Gang demonstrate clearly the bridge that Funk made between Soul and Jazz, with several of the tracks here leaning heavily in the direction that Herbie Hancock had taken with "Headhunters" - as in the title track. There is Funk like James Brown too - Funky Stuff and Hollywood Swinging as examples. So if you are expecting pop soul bland then forget it and buy Ladies Night instead

This is a great Funk album, ranking with anything prduced by 70's Funk bands like War or the Commodores (who took the same path).

5.0 out of 5 stars Tantric Funk 18 July 2009
By Sebastian Palmer TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I wrote a piece on this album for Drummer magazine (go buy it, it's a great read!) some time back, and just now, listening to 'Heaven At Once' (track four) I thought "I bet if anyone's reviewed this they haven't mentioned this little doozy"... I took a quick look, and it appears my suspicions were correct.

Andy Edwards has already said enough to justify any funk (or jazzy soul) lover flopping out their wallets or prizing open their purses for the better known tracks. I just want to add that 'Heaven At Once' is a thing of beauty, and yet another compelling reason to shell out for this masterpiece. Kicking off with a languid and harmonious 16th note groove, and a fabulous horn arrangement, with sax and vibes tootling away, a child's voice then enters into a truly wonderful dialogue with superdude Kool, who ultimately reveals that he and his band, under the cover of being a completely groovy funky soulful outfit (not that he makes that boast), are actually "scientists of sound, mathematically putting it down"... and what are they (re)searching for? "The key to the light". What's the key to the light you might well ask, as does the kid rappin' with Kool... for the answer, go buy this deliciously fabulous peach of an album.

It saddens me to say this, but, as far as I know, they (and by they I don't mean Kool & The gang, I mean anyone) don't generally make 'em like this any more.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE album to own in the fall of 1973 15 July 2002
By Andre M. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
When I was in the 3rd grade in the fall of 1973, this was THE album to own in Black American communities. Before J.T. Taylor arrived and the group became "dull and the bland" to their original core of fans, this album topped the soul charts with back-to-back raw, jazzy and funky hits like "Hollywood Swinging,"" Funky Stuff," "More Funky Stuff" (check the guitar solo), and "Jungle Boogie." An additional treat is the beautiful "Heaven At Once," where Kool Bell has a heart-to-heart talk with his younger brother Wahid to a lovely jazz background. Get this, "Live at the Sex Machine," and their self-titled debut "Kool & The Gang" and you'll see why the orginal version of this group were "Scientists of sound who were mathematically putting it down!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album from the greatest funk ensemble ever 5 May 2004
By souldrummer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Parliament, James Brown, and even Prince earn the headlines for greatest funkateers of all the time, but old testatment Kool and the Gang, pre JT Taylor, was the greatest band of all time. Their horns are tight and reveal the chops that lie underneath the riffs. "Jungle Boogie"'s horn lick is one of the best funk riffs ever. This was the first time they put it all together for an album that has no weaknesses. "Jungle Boogie", "Hollywood Swinging", and "Funky Stuff" are all classic cuts, but I like some of the lesser known tunes as well. "Wild and Peaceful" has a nice jazzy vibe and "Heaven at Once" has one of my favorite lines, "we're scientists of sound, matheamatically putting it down."

Classic funk from a very underappreciated band. The Godfather, James Brown, called Kool and the Gang is second favorite funk band [after his own of course]. Kool and the Gang has a positive message, stellar musicians, and no holds barred thrown it down funk.

Give this a listen and see the best of classic funk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pivotal album for Kool and the Gang 27 Dec 2001
By tehuti - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This album was the one that broke Kool and the Gang through to the mainstream. Unfortuantely it also marked the shift in their style and (in my opinion) the beginning of their decline. Prior to this album they had released a number of "Kool jazz" records that were mostly instrumental but were excellent. Wild and Peaceful was their first really commercial funk records that de-emphasized the jazz element in their sound. Don't get me wrong. I think this is their best album song-for-song. And they did have a string of good records afterward, but I miss the early K&G sound. If you are a fan of K&G today, this is the record that defined their sound going forward. If you'd like to hear how they sounded in the early days check out some of their stuff from the late 60s to 1972.
