Book Description

**Library Journal Best E-Book Romance 2012**
When The Devil Plays Cupid ... There Could Be Hell To Pay..
She needs a protector… Once seduced by whispered promises of a faithless lover, Phoebe Scott is determined to make a name on the Covent Garden stage, but after three years of bit parts, she realizes she'll never achieve her goals on her own merits. Finally acknowledging her success is dependent on a powerful patron, Phoebe determines to seek out a protector at London's most notorious brothel.

He's avowed to celibacy… Sir Edward "Ned" Chambers has been lost and lonely since his wife’s death in childbirth. Burdened with blame, he has sworn to a life of celibacy, but after three years, he is inwardly edgy, irritable, and increasingly discontent.

Desperate times call for devilish measures... Viscount Ludovic “The Devil” DeVere, a rake of the first order, is hell-bent to return his best friend Ned to the land of the living. Perceiving the cause behind his best friend’s unhappiness—as well as the obvious cure—DeVere takes matters in hand. DeVere’s meddling machinations result in an outrageous wager that could lead Ned to a new love… or land them all in the Tower. Hijinks and passion abound in this sexy, rollicking Georgian romp.

“The “Devil DeVere” series is a variation on the rake’s progress, or the rake’s reformation, except that is doesn’t start with said rake as the main character—a device that is amazingly clever on Vane’s part and allows her to circle in on DeVere without revealing too much at the outset. In the first two books DeVere is the puppet master, rearranging his friends’ lives. But in the background, readers catch hints that there’s more to him than the debauched reprobate they see. By the time we find out his story, we’re invested. The series is erotic and sexy, and sometimes you want to shake the characters until their teeth rattle, but it is absolutely marvelous. This one should be read with bonbons. And a fan!” – Marlene Harris for Library Journal

3.0 out of 5 stars The Devil DeVere book 1 29 Sept. 2012
By Sarah (Feeling Fictional) TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
Phoebe has spent years trying to make it as an actress and she is sick of never getting the best parts - not because she is unable to act but because she doesn't have a benefactor. She has come to the realisation that if she ever wants to be the leading lady then she will have to find a rich gentleman to become her patron and sponsor her role. Ned has been in seclusion in the country since the death of his wife but is forced to return to London society to make sure his daughter can make her debut. When he comes to the city looking for a house to rent for the season he takes the time to meet up with his old friend DeVere. DeVere is determined to shake Ned out of his celibate ways and decides that a Feast of Venus party at one of the brothels he visits is the ideal place to start.

A Wild Night's Bride is a fun and sexy read that I really enjoyed. At around 100 pages it is a quick read that is easy to devour in one sitting. You have to suspend belief at times because the actions of the characters are so over the top but that helps to make this an amusing read to pass the time with. I was slightly disappointed that Ned and Phoebe go from overwhelming lust to love so quickly though - I would have preferred them to spend some time getting to know each other rather than making declarations of love after spending just one night together.

While I would like to see more of DeVere unfortunately I really didn't take to Ned's daughter Vesta or her godmother Diana. The fact that they are the heroines of the next two novellas has put me off continuing with this series but I will definitely keep an eye out for other stories from Victoria Vane in the future.

Victoria Vane's Devil DeVere series is a erotic historical romance series. A Wild Night's Bride is the first in the series, the introductory novella where we get to meet the Devil DeVere and his best friend, widowed and still mourning solitary Ned.

Viscount Ludovic DeVere (alias The Devil DeVere) is notorious for his roguish partying ways, enjoying life at the fullest, so he can't stand to see his good friend still moping and alone after years have gone by since the death of his wife, so he takes matters into his own hands and starts some machinations to find him a companion to cheer him up.

Despite the short length of the novella I was satisfied with the characterisations Victoria Vane provided for the hero and heroine, both were likable, sympathetic characters. But what came as a surprise was discovering how, despite his awfully debauched ways, I grew to like Viscount Ludovic DeVere. It was clear that he had a good, generous heart even if he had a problem even spelling monogamy. *cough*

Victoria Vane gave us a vivid and colourful historical setting and the love scenes were truly scorching but what was a bonus for me was that A Wild Night's Bride besides being a hot novella is also a romantic story.

"You're trembling," she whispered. She gazed up into his face, and what she saw made her heart seize.
"Because I want you so much, my bloody teeth ache! My entire being is about to explode for want of you!"

Although the story was quite well paced I found the language often archaic which made the dialogues a bit lumpy.

I had one minor but crucial doubt regarding the plot: Ned is 36 years old and his daughter is about to become 18.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sparkling, funny, witty little Georgian Romp 2 Dec. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Sparkling, funny and witty, this smart little novella is rather like the warm, friendly author Victoria Vane herself. This is a steamy, little gem of a book, not for the prudish as the content is definitely naughty. Because it is a fun read, it is hard to take seriously, even the hot love scenes are tongue in cheek and I'm convinced that's what Ms. Vane intended. Not withstanding this Victoria has done her homework and her depiction of Georgian England, its foibles and fashions are spot on.

Viscount Ludovic ( the Devil) DeVere, is an outrageously promiscuous rake, manipulative in the nicest possible way. He is determined to drag his best friend Sir Edward (Ned) Chambers, kicking and screaming back into the land of the living...and loving, after his three long, grief stricken years of mourning the death of his wife.

Devil takes Ned to an up market brothel where he encounters Phoebe Scott, an impoverished actress in search of a rich protector. Ned and Phoebe are smitten with each other, Devil, astute despite his apparent lack of seriousness, intervenes to ensure his friend's happiness and the farcical romp that follows, very much in the vein of The Bawdy Adventures of Tom Jones, is funny, bittersweet, sexy and heartwarming.

I shall look forward to the rest of this 'devilish' little series with anticipation! And I hope that shortly Devil gets his comeuppance and is hoist by his own petard. 4 stars for sheer fun and naughtiness!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amusing and delightfully sensual 22 Jan. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Confidently situated in Georgian England, with a believable and well-researched historical setting, characterisation and dialogue. It is fast-paced, colourful, amusing and delightfully sensual, and the description is wonderfully visual. I loved the strong, uncompromising characters and the grittiness of their actions and choices, which felt true to the era. I found myself emotionally invested in the story, and hoping for a satisfying ending (which was neatly delivered).

What I most enjoyed was Victoria's expert juxtaposition of passionate, erotic content with mundane action, which added to the thrill of the sexual encounters. And goodness me, what steamy sequences!

I am looking forward to reading the next titles in this Devil DeVere series; the next one is cleverly set up in A Wild Night's Bride, meaning I'm keen to read on.

In all, I heartily recommend this novella for readers who enjoy fun, sexy historical romps.
