4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Twig on 11 Oct 2009
Format: Audio CD
I decided to review this cd rather than their brilliant follow-up, Furr, because this had no reviews and it deserves 5 stars after the title. I saw the band at the End of the Road Festival this year and was blown away. They sounded like the Beatles with Dylan as one of the vocalists; like the Byrds. I immediately bought their cds, hoping that I wouldn't be disappointed. I wasn't.

Wild Mountain Nation is more ramshackle than Furr. None of the tracks would be out of place on the 60s Nuggets album. Like Beck's Odelay, the songs vary, from the stomping brilliance of Miss Spiritual Tramp to the beautiful harmonies of Futures & Folly. There are loud songs, soft songs, country and western songs, rock songs, ballads - all different, yet all recognizably the same band. Their range is phenomenal, their harmonies superb, the musicianship outstanding. And fun!

I can see why more people have reviewed Furr. It's more measured and sweeter all round. But if you like the title track of that cd, along with God and Suicide, Black River Killer, then you'll also love Wild Mountain Nation. An absolute gem!
