Different and a good story!,
By Lucifer Knight (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wild Magic (Fool's Gold) (Paperback)
'Wild Magic' is the second book in Jude Fisher's 'Fool's Gold' series. What I enjoyed most about the novel was the diversity of the characters, many of which are far from stereo-typical, as can sometimes be found within the fantasy genre. There are plenty of weird and wonderful personalities here - particularly Virelai - who take time to fully appreciate and understand. This was certainly very refreshing. The pace skips along nicely and the book is packed with strange settings and societies and writing techniques that keep you glued to the plot. Perhaps there is a tendency to flick between the character groups quite systematically with each chapter and occasionally I found myself skipping forward to see what another group were doing! All in all, although this series does not stand out as truly memorable, if you're between stories and are looking for another series to dig into, then I would certainly recommend 'Fool's Gold,' as Jude Fisher tells a rather good tale.

An absolute must,
This review is from: Wild Magic (Fool's Gold) (Paperback)
After reading books one and two of ‘Fools Gold’ trilogy, Jude Fisher is right at the top of my list of favorite authors alongside Robin Hobb and George RR Martin. Her writing brings a breath of fresh air to fantasy with wonderful adventure, a sharp edge of humour and surprises at every turn. Unlike most fantasy novels, this is not a tale of battle between good and evil, but of a world full of possibilities and of the actions and consequences of the characters who live there. Fisher’s writing, full of humour and zest (that I think the British will appreciate best), flows across the pages so you could loose yourself in the book for hours: indeed, twice I’ve forgotten to get off the train on the way home from work! The characters are vastly differing and well developed: some are full of beans and some are truly ghastly and others are a complete enigma: I’m still trying to work out who the good guys are! Opinion of a character can change from one chapter to the next. The story encompasses faith, righteousness, morals, ambition, love, lust and obsession, and, above all, wild and unpredictable magic.

Wild Magic's throws a wrench into the genre,
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog "Falcata T... - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER)

Perhaps greatly known for the subtle advertising during one of the interviews featured on the UK release of the Lord of the Rings : Return of the King, but what does this novel offer the readers. The tale follows perhaps a truly unique heroine and as such will make many a reader wonder why such a heroine never appeared before. In addition to this the novel is a fast paced enjoyable romp (in more ways than one) through the lands of Elda and I believe will make you sit up and pay attention to perhaps one of the most realistic character castings in fantasy fiction today.
