This book is an indirect follow-up to the Wild book published late 2008/early 2009, and we do get to see those characters and their mates a touch, but I can't say that that was a pleasure, or that this book was.
It was ok - if you've not read the Sarah McCarty of old, but since she's gone mainstream, she seems to drag out short stories with endless descriptions of movements/dialogue/not 100% relevant stuff to eke the tales out, and her books are so light on the passionate scenes of her early stuff for Ellora's Cave - this book certainly was.
All of the tales take place over 2/3 days, during which time all of the 3 pairs of leads are mated and saying I LOVE YOU, though for werewolves we get told the mating comes first and foremost, being imprinted on males since birth, and love is not the most important - yet they then go on to court their mates(?). In each one we get the obligatory sex scene, which lasts maybe a page and is not very hot nor descriptive, and one of these comes days after one of the female leads has a miscarriage following a pregnancy which resulted from a rape?? Yes, she has just been converted from human to werewolf mate, but still, she is healing mentally and physically, but strangely has no fear of her Alpha male mate who is still an unknown quality?? Oh, and all of this action takes place after the females have been ambushed and have had to fight- 2 days ago - and are therefore hot, sweaty and dirty...yet this is conducive to hot passion? Then again, I suppose it depends on whether a werewolf's keen nose would find non-washed female an aphrodisiac...not for me!
This author has dropped out of my auto-buy list, but I will still read her thru my local library - after all, she's ok for book-drought days, but not as Keeper material. I am very sorry about this turn of events, as under EC she was an excellent and sought-after author, whose books sold out immediately they came into print, and I think I was one of her first and biggest fans. I have even cancelled all pre-orders of her 2010 releases.
