Product Description

Valentine, a blind, confused and dying old man, seeking his peace with God, makes his last confession to a visiting friend, Thoms Lyon, mistaking him for a priest. Thomas, in Newmarket to research for a new film, is placed in a moral dilemma. Wild horses wouldn't drag from a priest the secrets of the confessional - but then Thomas is not a priest. Should he tell what he knows from the confession, or not? He discovers that the solution to his quandary could mean the difference between life and death. WILD HORSES is a masterly mix of convincing characters, fine writing and an inscrutable and ingenious plot.

Book Description

Movie director Thomas Lyon came to Newmarket to rake the ashes of an old Jockey Club scandal for a new Hollywood film. Too late, he found himself listening to a blacksmith's dying confession. Found himself watching as the past came violently back to life. Capturing the shockwaves over one woman's macabre death nearly thirty years before is drama. But a frenzied knife attack on the set of Unstable Times is definitely attempted murder. Who stood to gain from the threats? Between truth and shadowy fiction, Thomas Lyon already knew too much. Following the real story could mean the difference between life and death. His own . . . Format:Mass Market Paperback
While visiting a dying racing columnist named Valentine Clark, Tom Lyon is mistaken for a priest by the confused old man and forced to hear his confession. Since the names mentioned by Valentine are totally unfamiliar to Tom, he disregards the confession as merely the product of Valentine's delirium.

Tom is directing a movie nearby which is inspired by a famous unsolved murder case from the past. Sonya Wells, the wife of trainer Jackson Wells, had died mysteriously of asphyxiation. Sonia was the sister-in-law of Rupert Visborough, a prominent member of the Jockey Club. The careers of both Wells and Visborough were ruined by the suspicion of murder. Valentine had known these two men as well as Sonia and several of her friends.

As the filming progresses numerous attempts are made to stop Tom from completing the project and perhaps solving the mystery of the killing. One of the actors is slashed while riding on the heath by an unknown horseman.Valentine's sister Dorothea is attacked and her house is ransacked. Tom is stabbed in a crowd. By the time Valentine's nephew is killed, it is very clear that the murderer is after Valentine's books and notes which are now in Tom's possession. In order to catch the killer, Tom does some research on exotic knives and then takes the necessary risks to lure him out of hiding.

I consider WILD HORSES to be one of the better crime novels written by Dick Francis. The book also contains some interesting glimpses into British filmmaking.

As always, Dick Francis tells a great story. I'm afraid I much prefer the books written by Dick Francis with the help of his wife than the latest ones which have been written with his son.

I am trying to re-read all the Dick Francis books, but had not come across this one before. and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. As ever the dialogue is well thought out and you feel you 'know' the characters within a very short time. This was an extremely well written story and I also got an insight into film-making from a Directors point of view. Would recommend to anyone!
