Product Description
Double-bill of fast-paced cult classics from the breast-obsessed director Russ Meyer. In 'Wild Gals of the Naked West' (1962), Meyer's parody of the western genre, Julie Williams stars as the girlfriend of the evil Snake Wolf (Frank Bolger). When Snake's woman shows interest in a diminutive stranger in town, the scene is set for a final showdown, complete with ten gallon hats and six-shooters. In 'Blacksnake' (1973) Lady Susan Walker (Anouska Hempel) rules Blackmoor plantation with a rod of iron (although she is pictured more frequently with a whip), aided by Captain Raymond Daladier (Bernard Boston). This arrangement comes under threat when Sir Charles Walker (David Warbeck) arrives to investigate the death of his brother, Lady Walker's most recent husband, inspiring the pacifist Isiah (Thomas Baptiste) and his fellows to rise up against Lady Jane's cruel regime.

Blacksnake is one of those films that is so bad, it becomes unintentially funny. Not kinky enough to be erotic and acted mostly by people who patently couldn't (heaven knows what Anthony Price is doing in it, maybe he needed the money) Where this film really get silly is when the characters try to make social comments about slavery and why blacks and whites cannot live in harmony etc. Anouska Hempel looks like a 1970's sex symbol planted in the 1840's, everything is wrong with her, clothes, hair, makeup etc; her camp Haitian chief of police is so effeminate he'd make Duncan Norville wince and dave Prowse is dave Prowse, a large, mute monster.
If you're a lover of kitch or the bizaire, this is for you, if not ignore

I'd heard people say that something was so bad that it's good but always thought they were talking tripe but Blacksnake is so bad, it's good.
For some reasom Meyer decided to do a period piece set in amongst the slave trade with no gratuitous nudity until the last 5 minutes when a sincere voiceover talks about equality while a couple run through the sand half naked but to quote Meyer 'Sex is out, violence is in' and that's what you get, 82 minutes of whipping, a liberal use of the "n" word and one of the few Meyer films to be released in widescreen.
Wild Gals Of The Naked West on the other hand has huge dollops of gratuitous nudity with the delightful Julie Williams taking most of the plaudits. The film is pretty much a silent comedy with the odd bit of narration from some old coot about a stranger cleaning up a town in the wild west full of shooting, boozing and womanizing. Dodgy sets, dodgy acting, dodgy script and dodgy music somehow draws you in to enjoying it or was I slightly blinded by Julie Williams wonderful bosom?
I'm not too sure but as a double bill, this is actually pretty good.
I would recommend the Meyer boxset rather than buying individual titles though.

This is one of the movies showing how cruel and unfeeling dominant women can be-Anouska Hempel as Lady Susan Walker amply demonstrates this by using her authority and her black snake-like long leather whip mercilessly on her black negro slaves who toil endlessly on her sugarcane plantations. She sees the black slaves as merchandise to be bought and sold like cattle and whips them on every small pretext.She is not aroused until her leather whip draws blood from a black slave's hide by tearing his skin.The slave's wails for mercy are answered with a cruel and sadistic smile from her.
