This handy pocket-sized book is a must for all non-package holiday travellers to Cyprus. Fitting ideally into a backpack or pocket, it contains a mountain of information not only about the diversity of wild flowers in Cyprus but their habitats and demeanour. Against a background of the history of the island Sfikas relates the introduction of humans to Cyprus and their effects on the ecology and geology.

The book contains geological maps, colour charts, plant keys and a glossary for plant identification suitable for the amateur or botanist. The photographs are sharp and well presented. It is definitely NOT a boring book and even for the non botanist it is a delight to read.

Well worth having on the bookshelf.

2.0 out of 5 stars A good overview with some limitations 4 May 2009
My copy is a paperback although I ordered a hardback. Initially I was pleased as it would be lighter to pack unfortunately the binding is so poor that most of the pages are now loose. It is certainly not a book to take into the field.
The content of book is excellent but limited as many of the the flowers that I found during my recent trip are not included.

The book is cheaply produced--several pages fell out in less than a week. Introductory chapters are informative and include a list of plant species endemic to Cyprus. However fewer than 200 species out of over 1,800 recorded in the country are shown in colour and these photos are variable in quality, some poor. I was able to identify some species that I had photographed but was left with many queries. Overall rather disappointing.
