Review

A wonderful guide and a labour of love. Every home should have one. - Alan Titchmarsh

A truly fantastic flora - David Bellamy

This outstanding field guide is a real joy to use. --Adrian Lovatt, The Eden Project

Simply stupendous, both in its coverage and in the good and often radical ideas to crack plant identification problems. It is a breathtaking achievement... a crowning glory of a field guide. - Plantlife

A wonderful guide. Clear, relevant and accessible writing is combined with beautiful paintings and excellent maps... An essential tool. - Tony Juniper, Friends of the Earth

Exquisitely illustrated... Her flowers are so lifelike you can almost smell them on the page. Yet for all its encyclopedic content, it can easily be carried in the pocket and is incredibly user-friendly. --Sunday Express

It certainly remains the most visually attractive and comprehensive...illustrated companion to British and Irish flora. - Gardens Illustrated

Beautifully illustrated...this book is easy to carry in a pocket and very user-friendly. --English Garden

This updated edition is by far the best field flora to take out on botany trips. All names are updated to the most recent standard. The illustrations are detailed and accurate, as well as being quite beautiful. The text is helpful, with mini-keys for many genera, and tips for identification. It also includes trees, grasses, rushes, sedges and ferns, unlike other popular field guides. There are small distribution maps for most species, useful to see if your ID is at all likely. The book lacks a full dichotomous key, but I haven't found this a disadvantage. A great buy for all with an interest in botany, at a very reasonable price.

I'm a botanist; this book is excellent. The pictures are outstanding, it contains distribution maps, and grasses and sedges are there too. It doesn't have the good keys that you'll find in Francis Rose's book, so ideally you should buy BOTH of them.

The reviews of Wild Flowers were very positive and when it arrived in the post it lived up to expectations. The book has superb illustrations by Marjorie Blamey which seem to possess greater clarity than those in the 2010 Collins Flower Guide (paperback version).
The inclusion of grasses rushes and ferns increases the scope of the guide without making it too weighty to carry, if anything it feels a little more portable than the Collins Flower Guide. The UK distribution maps included for most species are a useful addition and the text is clear and informative.
How well it stands up to being toted around in the pocket will be the acid test, if it lasts as well as my old 1993 Collins Pocket Guide (also by Blamey, Fitter & Fitter) I'll be very pleased.

Excellent. Can't fault it. Comprehensive. All you could need, without being too complex. The geographical distribution maps alongside each plant, absent in other reference books, is a great asset. I highlight species that are only found in my area with a highlighter pen which saves me a great deal of time. It is a book that you come to know well fairly quickly that I haven't found in others as the layout is so clear. I am an beginner in botany, yet this book has helped me enormously. Highly recommended.

I took and left my European book at my sister's farm in Loire Valley so I needed a new book for Britain only. I read reviews of new editions before deciding on this book and am delighted with all the contents (text & drawings). Cannot fault it at all.

This is a beautiful book and I would have given it five stars except that, for a complete novice, flowers are quite difficult to find if you don't know which family the flower you wish to identify belongs to. Classification by colour or habitat would have helped. This said the descriptions are very clear and the illustrations outstanding.

A beautiful book, just what I wanted. It has beautiful pictures of all the flowers listed and the information is detailed, but suitable for an amateur botanist as there are some helpful explanations. Downside is that I still find it quite hard to find a flower if I don't know what family it is from, but that is a minor downside compared to the wonderful detail. Love this book! I also love that it contains information on trees, grasses, rushes and ferns! Very informative, you should definitely consider buying this book!
