Perhaps only dedicated Elvis fans will know of - and appreciate- this unusual film but take a chance, it's infinitely more enjoyable than you mght readily assume.

Sandwiched somewhere betwen the early rock pictures and the mid-late Sxties froth that obscured his talent, Wild gives Elvis the rare opportunity to have a crack at a credible role, this time a young boy with a talent for writing who finds himself on the wrong side of the law.A sympathetic pyschiatrist- played by Hope Lange- offers him the chance of redemption and perhaps something more. The romance between these two is thoroughly persuasive and gives the film a strong emotional anchor that lends substance to a sometimes creaky plot. The music too arises naturally here from the situation, not bursting through irrelevantly as is often the case.

There are no barnstorming numbers here but if you're seeking a slice of something distinctively different look no further, Wild in the Country possesses charm in abundance.

This is a wonderful, beautiful and very touching film. Why Elvis was not given more films like these, astounds me, as had he been given more films of this kind of nature, he certainly would have excelled in acting and films.

This is a very sad film of a misunderstood teenager, who is very sophisticated, loves reading and recalls how life has abandoned him since the death of his screen mother, at the age of nine. He tells a psychiatrist his emotions, whilst living with his Mother's cousin. His Uncle has another motive for taking in Elvis, which is to marry his unmarried single mother daughter. However Elvis is not too keen.

His long time sweetheart's father taunts him constantly, and you just can't help feeling for his character. Elvis portrays his anguish and heartache with such emotion, that soon enough you forget who is playing the character, and are totally drawn to what happens next...

A brilliant film, with brilliant acting. Bravo Elvis!

Wild In The Country 2 May 2007
Format:DVD
Amazon's synopsis doesn't really do this film justice.

Out of the thirty three Elvis films, 'Wild In The Country' is my favourite. It is based on a novel by J R Salamanca and as such it is more serious than later films such as 'Blue Hawaii'. Elvis plays Glenn Tyler, a James Dean sort of character. Glenn finds himself in trouble with the law and talks to psychiatrist Irene Sperry (Hope Lange) as part of his rehabilitation. Soon, we see him in a different light. Glenn has two girls vying for his attention: 'bad girl' Noreen (Tuesday Weld) and 'good girl' Betty Lee (Millie Perkins). He tells his psychiatrist that there are two roads in front of him, so which will he choose? This has been described as 'perhaps the sexiest and most passionate of all Presley films' but it is also the most moving, and here's why.

There are two scenes in Wild in the Country that show Elvis at his finest as an actor. The first time Glenn meets his psychiatrist, he tells her about the death of his mother. It is impossible not to empathize with Glenn. Elvis is totally convincing but he would understand that sort of emotional suffering as Wild in the Country was made just three years after the death of his own mother. I imagine filming this scene brought back painful memories for Elvis, and that is why it is especially poignant.

There is another good scene towards the end of the film, when Glenn and his psychiatrist get stranded in a motel during a storm. This is a captivating performance from both Elvis and Hope Lange - she was, in my opinion, his best co-star. Elvis only sings three songs in this film and the fact that he isn't bursting into song every five minutes really helps the viewer to take him seriously as an actor.

If you want to show a friend that Elvis could act as well as sing, buy them a copy of 'Wild In The Country'.
