BBC ONLINE

" All of the actors deliver believable performances, the pace never flags, and it's refreshing to have a modern-day horror flick that doesn't rely on sudden bursts of VERY LOUD MUSIC to make audiences jump. Bloody good show ".

Wild Country is a refreshing bit of horror filmmaking....A nifty, modest British entry in the backcountry horror genre that knows its limits and doesn't outstay its welcome. Good stuff

Killer wombles 14 Jan 2011

A truly awful film. I'm not sure whether I disliked the night scenes or the day scenes most. The night time scenes you could barely make out what was happening, mainly relying on the cast reacting to an undiscernable shadow or shouting 'it's over there' whereas the daytime scenes showed the supposed werewolf to be some type of angry looking womble and looked just ridiculous.
It drags its feet for most of its running time focusing on 5 young scallies from inner city Scotland out in the wilderness camping. Only it didn't look like the wilderness either with its well managed hedgerows and tended fields. I wouldn't criticise the young cast who acted credibly given the dialogue and set pieces they were provided with although their characters were inately uninteresting. This film is so dumb though. Fighting off a crappy looking werewolf with pointy sticks or a pen knife. A couple of passable effects of bodies but I'm amazed that this film was persevered with. Surely the director/producer must have been doing their jobs and studying the filming process and how rubbish a lot of it actually looked. Really, really poor and I think even less of it because at the beginning the priest who abandons all the youngsters to fend for themselves in the countryside tells the story of Sawney Bean (a real life Scottish cannibal)an infinitely better tale, whilst driving them to their destination in a crude attempt to inject some creepyness early on but which otherwise had no relation to this film whatsoever.

A nice enough little movie, this, even if it ultimately goes nowhere. A bunch of urban kids set off on a camping trip into the wilds of Scotland. Things go wrong; they get lost. There's a monster. Fine.

Obviously working on a very low budget, the filmmakers are to be commended for trying something fresh. There's nothing pretty about these kids- they're gobby, snarly idiots from the inner city, and all the more believably human for that. But the bickering and throwing of strops as the monster closes in on them play like first year drama school improv rather than the focused telling of a story. The monsters are a little bit wonky too, but have an appealing strangeness about them that raises the entire picture up a notch.

Wild Country 30 Oct 2007

Format:DVD
Wild Country is a quirky hybrid of 80s style creature-feature and Scottish social realism. Good gore, strong performances by the young cast (including Martin Compston and newcomer Samantha Shields), a hilarious cameo by Peter Capaldi, a cheezy creature and a sweet ending. Different!
