simply stunning 24 Feb 2007

In my opinion, the best nature documentary films are made by BBC. This DVD for the aerial and underwater shootings of breathtaking beauty and incredible photographic quality is one of the best.

I am very fond of BBC's 'Wild' series. Australia, Africa, South America. That's why I bought this without hesitation.

The best part of this DVD set is... Wildlife on ONE: Iguanas (narrated by Sir D. Attenborough). That's right, the best is extra. And only that earns it an extra star. Let me tell you, why.

While the views are great on the 4-episode series, at least at first, after 2nd episode it starts repeating itself. You will see aerial view of one island at least 5 times, you get to know at least twice about a waterhole that is 120 meters deep and is there because the cave fell in. And the clips are also the same in quite some parts... The main animals who are covered in the 'Wild Caribbean' in decent detail are iguanas. The rest, the animals and sea creatures and birds are part of a ecosystem and that's more or less what you learn from it. A few bits and pieces more about some species, but not much.

The worst thing, however, is the narrating. The guy tells nothing exact, but the intonation and the wording after every third minute is that now something big is going to happen. This series definitely gets into Guiness Book of Records using the phrase 'even more spectacular' the most often.

I truly warn you: unless you know nothing of nature and need to be reminded the elementary stuff over and over again (that there are beaches in Caribbean etc) you are better off not seeing 'Wild Caribbean' part. Because it feels like it was not made by BBC, but just some tourist. No offence.

Wild Caribbean, along with "Wild Africa" and "Wild Down Under" are far and away the best I've seen. They make up for the geography I never had in school-beautiful, surprising, and all-around fascinating. They give equal time to nature's diversity and to the animals living there.
