Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Before Bristol gave us Massive Attack and Tricky, there was The Wild Bunch; a legendary sound system that launched the careers of some of British dance music's most innovative producers. Throughout the 1980s, the Wild Bunch reigned supreme on the West Country free-party circuit, making names of its DJs and MCs, the likes of Daddy G (Massive Attack), Tricky and Madonna producer Nellee Hooper. With such illustrious alumni, it makes sense that the Wild Bunch sound should be recorded for posterity, and who better to do it than original spinner DJ Milo? He does an admirable job, too, mixing up a spot-on selection of old-skool electro, hip-hop and disco, with the odd smidgen of house and a few snippets of original Wild Bunch gigs thrown in for effect. It's the sort of set you can imagine rocking a Bristol block party back in the day, though the obvious lack of reggae and soul seems strange given the Bristol sound's massive debt to both genres. That said, the track listing is impressive and the mixing immaculate, leaving us in no doubt: there ain't no party like a Wild Bunch party. --Matt Anniss

From the opening blast by Daddy G through to the mellow wind down of 'The Look of Love' this is a faultless collection of boss tuneage. The beats lurch from lunatic funk ridden hip hop, through electro (the superb mix of Man Parrish and Dimples D is worth the money alone) to mellow soulful female vocals. And if that wasn't enough you get Mr. Fingers thrown in for good measure and the wicked 'Dub Plate Fashion' from the boys themselves. The sleeve notes and photos are superb and perfectly capture the spirit of an era many of us would not have had the pleasure of living through. If you dig Massive Attack, Smith and Mighty or any other of the Bristol stuff you should check this out. Lovers of hard funky danceable music should also apply. Magnificent.

If you only like Massive Attack post 'Blue Lines' this mix may not be for you. This is a heritage mix showing where the roots of the Bristol Sound emanate from. DJ Milo, though now fairly unknown, is a major influence on Portishead, Massive Attack, Smith and Mighty, Roni Size and Full Cycle Crew etc. The 26 mixed tracks join the dots from the electro sound which developed from producers such as Roy Ayers, Nile Rodgers, Leroy Burgess and Patrick Adams through to the birth of Hip Hop and the beginnings of Massive Attack. You would be hard pressed to find a mix pulled together in a more formidible way than this. The DJing is exemplary and inventive, mixing electro with hip hop with boogie all topped off beautifully with 4 live audio snippets of The Wild Bunch at their club nights. These Audio files give a great sense of occasion and the electric vibe created by Milo and crew.

It took me a while to get into this but I now consider it key to my understanding of the 80's music scene and in the evolution of Massive Attack. If you're interested in music and how some of the key sounds of today developed this is for you. If you can't find it here beg borrow or do whatever to get your hands on a copy. Most of the tracks are as rare as hen's teeth so this is supreme value for money.

DJ Milo- respect due and check out his releases under the name Nature or Nature Boy- a true hero of the UK Underground and sadly missed.

This is a great mix - it goes from old school hip hop through loads of 80's tracks that u probably never heard. People after something resembling Massive Attack stuff might be disappointed because its more party vibe but they should cheer up and enjoy it - this has some amazing tracks. What Monica says is interesting tho - I'm sure they have some wide influences that would make a great follow-up album to this...
