4.0 out of 5 stars Up a Gum Tree? Find out which one! 20 Nov 2008
Format:Paperback
This may be a small, inexpensive book but it's packed with useful pictures and facts on just about everything that walks, crawls, swims or hops in that vast, facinating continent.
It also tells you what plants and animals are likely to eat, sting or bite you!
The short paragraphs are well written with very little "bull" and good colour photographs on what you are likely to see.
A budding Bill Oddie or Alan Titchmarsh may find it too basic but, because of it's size I would recommend it for anyone taking a trip to Oz.
Keep it in your backpack or car - it will be used!
Bad point - I couldn't see any advice on what to do about animal bites or stings.
Try the Royal Flying Doctor Service website for this before you go.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but very limited in content 23 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
I chose this book for a recent trip to help with identification of the variety of wildlife in the country. The book is nicely illustrated with colour photos and interesting, but non-specialist text. The main issue is that coverage (i.e. number of entries) is very limited given the vastness of the topic. Whereas in the UK there are excellent identification guides covering all wildlife, plants and animals, it seems (having looked extensively in Australia) that there is no such single book for this vast continent. If you are serious about identifying what you are looking at, I am afraid you will need to invest in a number of guides on e.g. birds, mammals, reptiles, spiders, plants etc. Also, we visited Western Australia and given the vastness of the continent, many (most?) of the entries did not apply to that area. See this as a 'souvenir' celebration of the variety, rather than a fieldguide.
