Amazon.co.uk Review
David Lynch's 1990 Wild at Heart is an utterly random and ugly experience with pockets of startling imagery and inspired set pieces. Based on a Barry Gifford novel, the film stars Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern as lovers on the lam whose relationship is tested and who meet some truly dangerous wackos (including an almost-simian Willem Dafoe). Lynch's thoughts seem to be everywhere, and he expects the audience to keep up with a story that seems more a collection of avant-garde whims than a coherent vision with the intuitive brilliance of his Blue Velvet. Cage gives one of his more chaotic performances, but then he was just reading Lynch's signposts. --Tom Keogh

4.0 out of 5 stars A ride on the wild side, 1 Jul 2003
If you like violent, funny and erotic movies then you're like me and you will love this film. Kicking off with an excellent cast headed by Nickolas Cage, Laura Dern and Diane Ladd (nominated for an academy award), this film takes a ride on the wild side. Following the lives of two lovers eloping from an angry mother, this film is quick to establish an emotional side with many classic songs along the way, only to end with murder. The film established director David Lynch as as a reputable movie maker and since its making, this 'Bonnie & Clyde road movie' has had ideas borrowed in many a film. With the release of this film on DVD fast approaching, you should be quick to snap it up as I feel that the new format will do the film no end of good. This movie should most certainly be at the top of your hit list.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite cult classic!, 29 Jul 2004

Despite an overwhelming use of imagery and metaphors, this is perhaps David Lynch's most accessible and understandable work. In comparison to other Lynch films, especially Mulholland Drive, the plot is relatively straightforward and understandable: A young couple whose love is forbidden by Dern's despotical and insane mother take a ride West to escape. However there is trouble on the way.
Lynch has a strange cast of truly skin crawling characters and strange psychedelic imagery which, if not appealing to everyones taste, do show creativity and imagination.
Perhaps one advantage is that most of the imagery and bizarre sequences take place in Laura Dern's mind, unlike in Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive where they are integral to the plot and must be understood if you are to unravel the film.
Overall a cinematic classic that shows Nicholas Cage in one of his defining roles. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the works of David Lynch, this is a very good introduction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhere over the rainbow, 17 Jun 2004

Lynch's ode to one of the most beloved classics of all time, Wizard of Oz. Who could forget the dazzling technicolour presentation of the land of Oz? Here Lynch presents all the ugliness and vile nature of the human condition in equally dazzling technicolour. You would only hope that the Wizard himself appears to correct all wrongdoings...Oh well, the good witch at the end will still do.
For the DVD, I gave only 2 stars as for the movie itself, 4 stars, thus overall it's 3 stars. This DVD has absolutely no extras. Nada, nyet, zilch. Not even a trailer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight fun and a trip into the heart of the weird and not so wonderful.
It's true to say that Wild At Heart is perhaps one of David Lynch's more-flawed cinematic endeavours, with many of the scenes, and indeed, the film as a whole, seeming incomplete... Read more
