5.0 out of 5 stars A must for aspiring naturalists. 11 Oct 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Seton Thompson's stories of wild animals and their wonderful ways touch the hearts of young and old. There are no happy endings in this book, because the moral is that animals always die tragic deaths. But if you want to learn the laws of nature and better understand animals and their ways, these accounts of a hunter-trapper will reward you with hours of enchanted stort-telling.

While to stories and tales in this book are as good as they have ever been I can not help but be bitterly disappointed by the quality of print in this book; I have purchased two version of this book from two different printer on here (Amazon) and both have exactly the same printing errors and omissions as the Google Books versions (also the same print layout) which is suspicions.
There are thousands of miss-prints and printing errors in the print of this book; i.e. she become slie and 1889 become ibbg. There are also line breaks where there should be none and one store runs into another. Some sentences have become un-readable and the meaning lost. There are also letters missing in-between works making it a headache to read this book.
It looks like the printers have used optical character recognition and not proof-red the book before releasing it.

I would whole-heartedly recommend buying this book but get and older release or another print run that this one - it is expensive and unreadable and has somewhat ruined my enjoyment of this book.

Since this book is out of copyright you can download and it read it off a lot of American website - which is my recommendation as I have spend to much money trying to obtain it in paper format.

**Update** Finally found a version that looks like it has been proof read and it still has the illustrations in place - I recommend the New Canada Library Edition (ISBN 978-0-7710-9380-7 w. afterword by David Arnason). Unfortunately if you like in the UK you will have to get this from Amazon.com not Amazon.co.uk as it is not sold over here!

5.0 out of 5 stars a brilliant set of real animal stories 26 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
Boxing day. I've just been rung by the younger of two sisters, 13 and 10, with thanks for this "lovely" collection of stories by the founder of the Woodcraft Folk which takes young children into the hills and forests to learn about living close to nature. They love the fact that the animals written about are real wild animals, observed by a man who was both a scientist and a lover of the natural world.

1.0 out of 5 stars A bit tedious 8 April 2012
Format:Paperback
I found this a little disappointing really. The concept and story lines were OK, but in the end I found it repetitive and tedious.
After reading a few of the stories, I gave up from lack of interest. Sorry
