Wife Against Her Will by Sara Craven 24 July 2006
By Reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is the most repulsive romance I have read in decades. With a title like that I should have known better, but never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be as sexist and brutal as it was. Darcy Langton is the most spineless heroine I've seen in years, taking all kinds of abuse and doing little except argue about it. She's an endless victim. There's all the old repulsive cliches, including her spitting out "I hate you!" There's so-called "forced seduction" by the so-called hero Joel Castille, even after she's said "no." And there's a disgusting flashback where Darcy is shown to have been raped when she was a teenager. What a mess! I thought they quit writing trash like this in the seventies. Not reccommended at all.

Not perfect but quite good! 25 July 2006

Format:Mass Market Paperback
Back cover: The bartered bride! Darcy Langton is horrified when she finds herself engaged to arrogant businessman Joel Castille-traded as part of a business merger, no less! While Joel represents everything she most loathes in a man, he`s also, frustratingly, the most charismatic man she`s ever met.

It`s soon clear that Joel has absolutely no intentions of honouring their in-name-only agreement, and away from the boardroom Darcy is unable to resist her husband`s sensual persuasions. But when Darcy makes a shocking discovery about her new husband, it`s up to Joel to woo her back-or risk loosing his most valuable asset for ever...

My opinion: these books are not for feminists...they are quite chauvinists...and they have absolutely nothing to with real life as we know it...and I also think that many "art movies" (I mean French movies) are much more nauseous : ( p.s. I turn my feminist side off when I read them : )

22yo heroine is shocked to see Hero again after their ill-fated meeting 4 years ago. She finds out that he's the man her father chose as his predecessor for his company and does her best to stay away from him & tells him so. It was therefore a surprise that Hero would even propose a marriage of convenience due to business reasons. She agrees after Hero promises her certain things including a sex-free marriage. But their marriage soon turns out to be different than what she expected.

I had problems with the main characters of this Craven book. Heroine was a passive-aggressive doormat who waited for permission to be allowed to do things while being resentful about it & blaming others for stifling her wants. She grated on my nerves with her attitude! Hero was a coercive and manipulative guy who lied to get his way. He agreed with her marriage condition to not have sex because of her date-rape experience. He showed what an alpha-hole he was when he emotionally coerced her to have sex on their wedding night. He played word-games with her by informing her that his promise was to not "sleep" with her but having sex with her was another matter. And she was stupid to even agree with him instead of kicking him out.

Interestingly Craven was able to somewhat redeem Hero's jerkiness by the end. His confession to how he fell instantly in love with her & planned their marriage of convenience because he so wanted to be with her was kinda touching. It showed his obsession with her & desire to possess her albeit in a stalker kind of way. It showed his vulnerability & willingness to be so with heroine which was opposite of how he'd been acting towards her for most of the book. Both have a long way to go in their emotional & relational health but I believe that these 2 imperfect people genuinely love each other. They'll just need a lot of work to have a healthy long-term r/s.

Partially recommended.
