Fabulous play, but the real draw for me was the inclusion of all three episodes of Stuart Burge's beautiful adaptation of Lawrence's 1915 novel The Rainbow on side two of the disc. Starring Imogen Stubbs, it's a mostly very faithful adaptation, often lifting its dialogue directly from the book - my favourite Lawrence novel. The music is beautiful and the performances still knock the wind out of me even twenty years after I first watched it. I also prefer it to the Ken Russell version that was released in cinemas shortly afterwards. It's bizarre that the presence of The Rainow is relegated to a small square at the bottom of the front cover, when, if anything, I'd consider this production the bigger draw! Bizarrely, this version of The Rainbow isn't available on UK DVD. Maybe the new BBC adaptation of Women in Love will nag someone to dig this serial out of mothballs!

Either way, you get two fabulous adaptations of Lawrence's works for a ridiculously small price. Well worth importing.

OK, firstly I bought the specifically for The Rainbow and that is what I'm going to mention. For some reason it has little mention on the DVD or the product description here.
The main title is a studio-based drama that I have to say I'm not interested in but judging by the production quality it is cheap-skate in comparison to The Rainbow.
The Rainbow is the full three one hour episodes shown on the BBC in Dec 1988. The BBC did show an cut down two-episode version in 1992 but thankfully this is the full version. It is a gorgeous production set all around Nottinghamshire which and it oozes quality in every way.
The quality of the acting is second to none with Imogen Stubbs doing superbly as Ursula. Combining the acting, location, period sets and costumes, along with magical score, this is a top quality mini series. One that should have been top billing on this DVD.
It's a pity the BBC doesn't release it in the UK or even reshow it. Perhaps they prefer their 2011 Women In Love/The Rainbow filmed in hot and dusty South Africa (no offence) rather than lush Nottinghamshire.

I did have this play on video, but my husband taped over it!

Zoe Wannermaker is fantastic in her portrayal as the down trodden, long suffering wife. D.H.Lawrence is a superb observer

of the frailty of the human condition - a real genius!

I am just waiting for the d.v.d. to come back to me in the post, as I had to send it to a friend to make it compatable to watch

on my video recorder, as it came from the States, so I haven't actually been able to watch it yet!
