To set the scene, the year previous to the release of WIDE AWAKE (from the album PORTRAIT) I had the privilege of seeing/hearing Celtus for the first time and was absolutely mesmorised by their wonderful sounds and skills. I bought MOONCHILD, their first album, that night and feel I've found my musical heaven in Celtus.
One year on ...... I was driving to a friends with my little girls, radio playing, although I was not paying much attention to what was on. In all honesty, it is not often I hear tracks on the radio that excite the senses. The DJ didn't mention Celtus until WIDE AWAKE had finished, but as soon as the magical introduction started I immediately turned up the radio and asked the children to be quiet, NOW! I felt sure when the singer's voice came in, it would confirm it was CELTUS - the clue to the identity laying in their unique style and quality.
The intro is sensual, hypnotic and draws you gently into the first line "softly the darkness unfolds in silent embrace". The haunting harmonies, together with the lure of the stunning voice of John McManus will lead you through a story of longing .... of the feeling of helplessness we've all felt, laying awake at night, mind and heart racing, knowing a love affair is floundering. WIDE AWAKE ebbs and flows beautifully between gentle, melodic verses and a powerful, passionate chorus (which is fantastic to sing with! )
I must tell you all, with hand on heart, that WIDE AWAKE is one of those rare singles you can play endlessly - and I do - only to feel that with each play it just goes on sounding richer and even more wonderful!
"Believe" is another superb track - for me it was instantly memorable after hearing it for the first time. Again, great tune and instrumentals here.
"Strange Day" starts with the beautiful sound of falling rain - haunting cries and low whistle follow, in turn followed by the echo of drum- beats before embarking on the lyrics. Fantastic lyrics and instrumentals combine with lots of haunting low whistle. As soon as I've heard this track I immediately want to hear it again. I think the variety that Celtus gives always leaves me wanting more - I never tire of their work, they are a brilliant live band also and in my view that never disappoint. It constantly amazes me the range of instruments that they play and how talented they are. Celtus have hit upon a great combination that really appeals to a wide spectrum of taste - I recommend them any day of the week!
