Product Description

Product Description
As a wit, Wilde lived by his own maxim: "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." A century after he left that world, he is not only still talked about, but widely quoted. This tribute marks the centenary of his death.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wildean wit, 22 Nov 2004
This is one of many similar books bringing together all the best Wildean one-liners. So what's different? It looks good, but there's more to it than a pretty cover. The chapters covering different subjects are well chosen; relationships, art and religion, Oscar's foreign travels, education, society etc. All things on which Wilde made his best comments. The lines themselves are well chosen - once remembered they are ready to use during any conversation! Some people think that when they are taken out of context they're not as funny or are meaningless, but I disagree. A book like this can be a good introduction to a writer, and can encourage a person to read the works themselves.

This is one of the better collections of Oscar's numerous ripostes. Maria Leach obviously holds him in some esteem, and it definitely helps. If you only ever buy one of these books, make it this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Job Interview Material, 28 Jul 2007
By Mr. Tim D. Patmore "Magic Lemur" (Somewhere in Madagascar) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I carry this book to every Job interview I go to and it never lets me down! It is easily the most accessible of any of the books by or about Wilde and is an excellent distillation of his wit into a book that can be picked up and understood in five minutes.

Of course, it isn't exhaustive, and can sometimes get a little flowery, but that is arguably its best feature - it can make you think like Oscar Wilde without the need to read any of his other works (although they are recommended!)

So if you want a book that will give you a sharp wit and an ability to create 'bon mot', then I sincerely recommend this book.
