Book Description

24 Jun 2010
She's pretty enough to be popular, and Lord knows she's rich enough for it. But what society loves best about Gwen Maudsley is how very, very nice she is. So when a cad jilts her at the altar - again - an outraged London brays for blood. Only Gwen has a different plan. If nice no longer works for her, then it's time to learn to be naughty. When Alexander de Grey, a notorious rogue, takes Gwen on an educational tour through the glittering casinos of the Riviera, their friendship gives way to something hotter, darker, and altogether more dangerous - and Gwen must convince Alex that his wickedest intentions are exactly what she needs.

"Witty, often hilarious, sensuous, and breathlessly paced, Duran's engaging, mystery-enhanced escapade sweeps its charmingly matched protagonists across the continent, in and out of danger, and eventually into each other's arms."

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful hero 10 Jun 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Each & every one of Meredith Duran's books sparkle with wonderful vibrant characterisations & story lines & this is no exception.
Gwen Maudsley is a responsibility to Alex De Grey because he promised Richard - Gwen's Brother- that he would take care of her without exception. Everyone believes that she is a respectful, very kind & able person. She hates this label & when she is jilted at the alter for the second time she has basically had enough & decides to embark on a journey to Europe to give chase to her fiance who has absconded with her brother's ring that she held very valuable as it was the last item that she owned of his. Despite Alex offering to retreive this ring she insists in going to get it back.
Along the way they " discover " one another but unknown to Gwen- Alex knows a lot about Gwen through her brother who was very close to Alex to the extent that he knows her better than even herself. So begins this truely wonderful story of Gwen's discovery of herself & her love for Alex. Its a great captivating story till the very last page & the ultimate test that proves that Alex loves Gwen in return is depicted beautifully.
Gwen is not shallow as is often characterised by others authors of their heroines & on many an occassion she surprises Alex with her actions. I love the way that we are made to feel about him though & the steady admiration that grows as the story progresses to the extent that you wished that there were truely men out there like his character.

Great read - well worth a prime position on the bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spicy and saucy 15 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had to write a review because I felt the marks here were unfair. Meredith Duran is by far on the of the best upcoming historical romance writers out there. I've enjoyed all her books and usually read them in one sitting. Like all of my favourite authors, there are books that I would re-read and others that I just enjoyed. This one belongs in the first camp. The usual magical ingredients are there: good plot, a bit of angst, steamy sex scenes (phew, they are really hot!), humour and well written dialogue. I also really like the characters, Gwen grows from being a timid, apologetic person to a woman who knows what she wants and who she wants. Alex's tries to fight off the attraction but ultimately fails. It's an great read with lots of pushing and pulling in different directions. Maybe this is why there are some average reviews but I like the pull of this book enough to have re-read it already and I will enjoy it in the future.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful - couldn't even finish it 21 Sep 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Going by the previous reviews, it seems like I attempted to read an entirely different book. I found both characters irritating, although I did feel for Gwen when initially jilted, the insults in her letter were so modern and unlikely, I started switching off there and then, and when she started talking about knitting sweaters in 18-whenever-it-was...it's the usual sloppy US phrasing and editing. I've got used to reading about English people hiding in closets, or enjoying the brisk fall weather. It's jarring, but a fact of life if I'm reading a romance. This was a new one, and she kept going on about it. It's a jumper. Not a sweater.

Other than that, I just couldn't get into this book - and I read a lot of romances. I found Gwen too modern and the "hero" too wimpy. I even tried skipping to the end to see if I cared about how they turned out - still didn't inspire me to get past the first half. In the end, I was delighted I got this from the library, and was considering sticking a warning note in there for anyone else contemplating taking the book out.
