Book Description

28 Jun 2004

"This is an excellent book. It contains the 'in the trenches' coverage that the enterprise administrator needs to know to deploy wireless networks securely." --Robert Haskins, Chief Technology Officer, ZipLink Wi-Foo: The Secrets of Wireless Hacking is the first practical and realistic book about 802.11 network penetration testing and hardening. Unlike other books, it is based on a daily experience of breaking into and securing wireless LANs. Rather than collecting random wireless security news, tools, and methodologies, Wi-Foo presents a systematic approach to wireless security threats and countermeasures starting from the rational wireless hardware selection for security auditing and finishing with how to choose the optimal encryption ciphers for the particular network you are trying to protect.

Product Description

From the Back Cover

The definitive guide to penetrating and defending wireless networks.

Straight from the field, this is the definitive guide to hacking wireless networks. Authored by world-renowned wireless security auditors, this hands-on, practical guide covers everything you need to attack -- or protect -- any wireless network.

The authors introduce the 'battlefield,' exposing today's 'wide open' 802.11 wireless networks and their attackers. One step at a time, you'll master the attacker's entire arsenal of hardware and software tools: crucial knowledge for crackers and auditors alike. Next, you'll learn systematic countermeasures for building hardened wireless 'citadels''including cryptography-based techniques, authentication, wireless VPNs, intrusion detection, and more.

Coverage includes:

  • Step-by-step walkthroughs and explanations of typical attacks
  • Building wireless hacking/auditing toolkit: detailed recommendations, ranging from discovery tools to chipsets and antennas
  • Wardriving: network mapping and site surveying
  • Potential weaknesses in current and emerging standards, including 802.11i, PPTP, and IPSec
  • Implementing strong, multilayered defenses
  • Wireless IDS: why attackers aren't as untraceable as they think
  • Wireless hacking and the law: what's legal, what isn't

If you're a hacker or security auditor, this book will get you in. If you're a netadmin, sysadmin, consultant, or home user, it will keep everyone else out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wireless Security? This book *is* the bible! 10 Sep 2004
Format:Paperback
If either your job title contains any of the words "Network", "Systems", "Administrator" or you play with networks as a hobby, and you've ever had anything to do with installing, commissioning or working with wireless networks - listen up: The Bad Guys are after your Wireless LAN.
In this ground-breaking book, the three authors will tell you three main things: who is after your Wireless Network, How they can get in, and (most importantly) how to keep them out.
This is the first book I've ever read that re-defines Wireless penetration testing almost as an art-form. You'll learn the equipment to use, where to get it and how to set it up, the software tools to use (and those to avoid) and how to test and secure many different kinds of Wireless network. Importantly, the authors place as much importance on keeping out the Bad Guys as teaching you just how they get in. Also covered are detection techniques, hardware hacks, and steps to take in the event of a break in.
By the end of the book, you'll have the equipment and knowledge to audit Wireless Networks, discover security holes, and fix them.
If you have any interest at all in Wireless Networking, or your job includes the management of Wirless Equipment - BUY THIS BOOK NOW!

I picked up this book as the title was rather catchy, and being into InfoSec it seemed like a fitting read.
What can I say, this book contains everything that you need to know about wardriving, I'm just hoping that they bring out a revised edition when this one gets dated.
I've used countless techniques in this book for client penetration tests, and I love the fact that the book goes deeper than most books do on the subject of wireless chipsets.
Don't even waste the time thinking about whether you should buy this book, just get it now! You won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have book for all Security Boffins. 14 Nov 2004
Format:Paperback
I can't begin to express the amount of info am gobbling now since I bought Wifoo last evening.
It's a gr8 book and is one of my tools for the CWSP EXAM.
Am very happy with the way the info is presented;
especially in the form of ......attacks first then
solutions ...plus some humor to paste.
It does relate to what is out there NOW!
I salute and congratulate the Author's at Arhont Ltd
for writng the only book on Wireless security out
there that tells it as it is.
With the hands on experience evident in the style it
has inspired me to read and practice more , but most
of all to think laterally.
If you want to "know your enemy", read Wifoo.
;-)
