Product Description

Product Description
Everything you ever wanted to know about the human body - and some things you'd rather not...A wonderfully entertaining yet authoritative treasure trove of facts about our anatomy - it answers all the questions about our bodies we're usually too embarrassed to ask.* Why is yawning contagious? Some experts think that yawning may have developed as a means of communication. It may, for example, be a way of signalling to others that it's important to remain alert and stay awake in a certain situation. Another theory is that our early ancestors used it as part of their social behaviour, and as a way to help build a bond with the rest of the group.* Why are bogies green? When white blood cells meet germs, they make a large amount of an enzyme called myeloperoxidase, which is green because it contains a lot of iron. The colouration therefore comes from the iron.

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and fun, 23 Jan 2008
This trivia book contains many questions and answers about the human body. Some of the questions are serious such as, `Why is yawning contagious?' and others are quirky, such as `Is it possible for a spider to live in your ear?' There were some interesting snippets of information such as the fact that Eton boys were once made to smoke to help ward off the plague - otherwise they were whipped. Overall, I thought this book was excellent and I learnt a great deal about the body.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Book for body trivia!!, 28 Feb 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed this book which is filled from cover to cover with facts about our bodies. I wish I'd had this book to hand when my 2 children were growing up as it supplies answers to the questions such as ...why do we yawn? and why do we shiver?
It's definitely a book for picking up at any time, opening a page and discovering whether an old wives tale has any substance.
I bought this book for relatives at Christmas as it makes ideal stocking fillers. I'd recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book, some sections repetitive, 3 Jan 2008
Overall, I'd say this is a good book for light reading, as it addresses many peculiar scientific occurences and events within the human body. I've only given it 3 stars as it was dry in some areas where it used a lot of biological terminology which I just skipped over as it has been a while since I learnt chemistry and biology!

Overall, a decent compilation of peculiar questions on the human body.
