Book Description

A science-based Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus

Product Description

You know how it can get when a relationship turns sour. Women want to talk things through. Men want to walk away and ignore the problem. It's an uncomfortable scenario that we've all witnessed or experienced, and one that we'd like to avoid.

By explaining that it is the fundamental differences between men and women that can make relationships so hard, authors Patricia Love and Steven Stosny reveal that the key to a great relationship is not communication but rediscovering and maintaining the connection a couple felt when they first met. Their groundbreaking techniques show how to engage with a partner and reignite the feelings that made that partnership so special to begin with.

This is a relationship self-help book with a difference, co-authored by a man and woman and offering the perspective of both sexes. For me as a man, the great strengths of the book are these dual perspectives and the strong challenge offered to the assumption in many other self-help books that relationships can be improved only by the kind of heart to heart deep emotional conversations that women can find very productive in relationships between themselves, but that many men, including me, find very difficult. It offers simple tips for improving your relationship in ways that any man or woman can do even with fairly minimal active co-operation from their partner. Almost any couple can benefit from this book.

This book is fascinating in that it looks behind different gender responses to situations and helps us understand the root of these responses. By tackling how we are "made" through DNA, cultural upbringing and the societies in which we live, this book explores how the different genders respond to different situations and the chaos that can ensue through genuine misunderstanding.

This is not a book about who is right and who is wrong, it's about the differences and how to approach them, with the constant underlying message being that if we approach our relationships from a position that is positive and supportive, no matter what the other person has said (!), that the relationship will deepen and flourish. That may sound simple, but when they explore how what is said and what is heard can be two totally different things, it becomes a salutory lesson in how we impact others with our words.

The learning I will take away is about how men see their role as the protector and because this is so much a part of their character, it becomes incredibly easy for them to construe what we say as criticism that they are not doing their job of protecting us. And where women have such a strong need for connections, when a man walks away (to find space to think, or find space just to be) that can be easily misinterpreted as not being wanted.

Boy, we are complex creatures, but this book at least unravels a little of that complexity and offers us the chance to create the relationships we really want.
