Book Description

13 Oct 2009
How do you feel about Christmas? Excited and childlike at the upcoming celebrations? Or bored and slightly jaded by yet another dose of Victorian sentimentality and commercialism? If you're feeling the latter - then this is the book for you! Author Nick Baines takes a personal journey through the ups and downs of the typical Christmas experience, asking whether there is really anything more to it than fairy tales and mass consumerism. Funny, thought-provoking and never preachy, he discovers that underneath all the layers of shopping and spending, Christmas can still offer deep joy and meaning for us in the twenty-first century.

Review

'... a rallying cry for Christians to become counter cultural ... [Baines] hows how easy it is to throw God (and baby Jesus) out of Christmas along with Santa Claus as we become too old for "fairy stories" ... For non-believers he makes a pretty good case to suggest that if they look beyond the "presented" Christmas into the real thing they might just find something of what they are looking for.' -- Clem Jackson 200909

5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh look at the Christmas story 8 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A very easy read, and wrote in a way you can understand, it makes you think and it could still relate today in our society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amusing, relevant and thought provoking 25 Jan 2010

this little book is an excellent read and makes it very easy to see the relevance of the Christian story to our modern life and troubles. Thought provoking and well written, it looks at important issues in a light hearted and readable style that doesn't attract at all from the importance of the message. You would not have to be a committed Christian to enjoy this book - in fact, it would be an excellent introduction for someone who wanted to understand the appeal of Christianity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book 4 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Read this to see if the media fuss was justified. It wasn't. A good statement of what matters about the Christian Christmas and why it is very relevant to living in the real world. Interpretation of the Nativity narratives a bit trad though - doesn't seem to realise there are two different stories.
