There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and more than a few quiet ones, too, in this outstanding new collection from one of the UK's top children's poets. Roger Stevens' work is always infused with a lively mix of wit and wisdom, and this latest batch of poems doesn't disappoint. The silliness of `Farewell, Pete' (I had a little dinosaur/Nothing would it eat/But a chocolate cupcake/And my best mate, Pete...) is nicely balanced with the subtlety of such pieces as `Silent Song'. Add in standout poems like `The Brown Bear',(In a dark wood/In a clearing/Sleeps a brown bear/Dreaming, dreaming...) and you have a book that is thoroughly engaging throughout. With a variety of verse forms, both rhymed and unrhymed, and subjects ranging from football to best friends, from Christmas to Cathedrals, and from dinosaurs to dogs, this is a must-have for both the school classroom and anyone who enjoys the best of what children's poetry has to offer.
