A hugely witty, and emotional rollercoaster!!, 21 Nov 2002
I read Low's first book 'What If?' and thought it was excellent, and so when I discovered that her second novel was out, I had to buy it straight away!If you have read the previous novel, you will undoubtedly recognise ‘Jess Latham’ as one of the characters from there. This story takes her perspective from before 'What If?' and after. This clever take on the 'sequel' genre made the novel that much more interesting, and as you already know the characters, you get to fall in love with them all over again! However, if you are a Shari Low ‘virgin’, then this book is still irresistible! There is no need to have read the first book to get to know the characters, as they are introduced to the reader again (but this time in the way ‘Jess’ sees them, and not ‘Carly’ from ‘What If?’). Taking the reader through a diary-esque, month-by-month account during two years in the life of ‘Jess Latham’, you discover just how the character changes from a straight-laced, sensible, up-standing citizen, to a laid-back, fun-loving girl. With unexpected twists and turns, and laugh-out-loud moments, you’ll be gasping for more at the end of each chapter. Low has created real-life characters that spring from the page as you are reading. Whether it be the loveable Jess, or the formidable Basil, you get to know these people like they were friends, and end up missing them when you’ve finished the book! This is a story of life, love, heartbreak and revenge. You’ll end up crying in the sad parts, and crying (from laughter) in the funny parts. A book that you’ll want to read time and time again. But most of all, it’ll make you realise just how important friends are, and how much fun cold-blooded revenge is!
