Review

lays bare the science behind our battle with this most notorious of diseases (The Independent )

This is an uplifting illustrated text on the successes of science ... I recommend this book to everyone working in health care and all those wanting to know more about cancer and finding a cure (Zoe Williamson, Nursing Standard )

What's interesting about this book is Pecorinos skill in writing about the science of cancer in everyday language (Sylvia Thompson, Irish Times )

Product Description

"The enormous recent progress in fighting cancer, and the science behind it, is revealed fully for the first time in this book. The disease affects one in three over a lifetime but today more and more people are surviving as a result of the extraordinary and little known advances of science and medicine.
Using scientific evidence from world cancer experts, Lauren Pecorino helps us understand the biology of cancer, the recent trends in cancer progress, and the rationale behind new cancer treatments. With recommendations about lifestyle choices that can help reduce some of the risks of getting cancer, Pecorino looks to the future in our battle with this disease."

5.0 out of 5 stars Understandable, Educational, Enjoyable 26 Feb 2012
By P53
Format:Hardcover
With respect to my academic inclination for science, suffice it to say that I was not a science major in college. I have lost two very close relatives to cancer, though, and I wanted to learn more about the disease and perhaps achieve a greater understanding of my own risk factors. I found Lauren Pecorino's book to be highly understandable, educational, and even enjoyable reading.
I especially admire her imaginative use of analogies to explain the biology of cancer. She explains the process of metastasis using the analogy of prisoners escaping from an island. The possible effect of a DNA mutation is explained with an analogy to an error in a musical score, whereby one error can potentially alter the whole tempo of the song. There are many more such analogies throughout the book.
Much evidence is presented showing how lifestyle changes can significantly reduce one's risk of getting cancer, and ultimately, the book presents the Good News that science is steadily achieving success in the fight against the disease.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 4 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
My Daughter actually recommended this book to me and to be honest, I wasn't sure that I would fully be able to understand the point it was trying to get across. I was pleasantly surprised. The writer clearly explains scientific information even someone who hasn't studied science for a very long time like me can understand. It gives anyone the opportunity to understand and learn from the amazing scientific research which has become the foundation for cancer treatments and preventions. Brilliant book by a passionate writer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read This book Now! 25 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover
Wow! I have just finished this book and I feel I know more about cancer than I could have learned by watching a hundred TV documentaries.

Who would EVER have thought an author would write the GOOD NEWS about cancer?! But that is what this author, Lauren Pecorino has done. Everybody talks about cancer, you read about it in the papers, you hear about it on the news or in a programme, and sadly, some of us learn from personal direct experience of having a close loved one die from it. The figure is quoted as 'One person in three' and that is enough to make me need to know more, so I took a chance, or so I thought; the chance that I would buy a book which would flummox and bamboozle me with hardcore science and make me feel like I was back in some nightmarish chemistry class. But chance was in my favour and this book is written for ordinary people, just like you and me. I read it with ease and my mind was able to absorb it all.

I feel I know more now than I ever did and I believe this book is inspirational and will help people to understand the nature and causes of cancer, the best ways to increase your chances of avoiding it and also the exciting and literally fascinating therapies which are being currently designed and also those which have been already been designed.

There are so many other books out there which drone on and on like my secondary school chemistry teacher, this book will grab your attention, make you sit up and it actually makes you feel like you've conquered your own fear of something which, let's be honest, none of us know much about.

Beautifully written and I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who felt like I did before I read this amazing book. Buy it and read it, you won't regret it.
