Dr. Judy Pearson is a Licensed Professional Counselor, life coach, author, and speaker, with a doctoral degree from Catholic University and post-graduate certification in Clinical Hypnotherapy and Solution-Oriented Counseling. She is a Certified Master Practitioner and Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). She owns Motivational Strategies, located in Springfield, Virginia, where she provides NLP-based coaching, counseling and hypnotherapy for people who want to change their habits and improve their interpersonal communications skills.
Dr. Pearson has authored four books and over 200 articles and book reviews. In 2012 she published Why Do I Keep Doing This?!!, on self-hypnosis and NLP, with cutting edge strategies for banishing bad habits, managing stress, and motivating yourself. This year she will publish Improve Your Writing with NLP. Her recent e-book, on Kindle, is Stop Arguing: Easy Conflict Resolution for Couples.
She has taught with the American Hypnosis Training Academy, in Silver Spring, Maryland since 1992. For three summers she taught as an adjunct professor with Webster University's Masters Degree program in Counseling. She is Executive Director of the National Board of Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists and a member of the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis and the Association of NLP. Great book in a great condition! However, no CD! I could not give the book less than three stars, but had it included the CD in good order it would have five stars. I am so disappointed!

"Why Do I Keep Doing This!!?" discusses addictions, why we have certain habits, and how we can break free. I like how Dr. Pearson puts the habit in the context of other health related topics including self-esteem, nutrition, sleep and exercise. Breaking a habit is not just focusing on the habit, but considering other lifestyle choices and circumstances.

I benefited from the accompanying CD on self-hypnosis techniques. While this book is beneficial for confronting and eliminating habits, the unexpected bonus for me is that I have redefined part of myself - something that was holding me back. For 3 years, I have not been able to run, but because of the CD, I started running last month, with a goal of completing a triathlon (which includes a 5K run) next month!

My running blockage has not been mainly physical, which I had told myself, but mainly mental. Self-hypnosis and NLP are helping me to unblock some areas that I assumed had taken root. The beauty of this book is that we CAN make changes and this book gives specific tools and techniques. It is not another book on theory. The reader will have to do some work. Do not read this book and let it sit on your shelf. Roll up your sleeves and do the work - you will not be disappointed!

I like how the author mentions the work of other prominent NLP practitioners and shares practical ways to diminish and demolish unwanted habits and addictions. She emphasizes that relapses are the norm rather than the exception when trying to overcome addictions.

"Why Do I Keep Doing This!!?" is comprehensive. The reader may tend to be overwhelmed at first. This book is best read and implemented over a period of time, perhaps 2-3 months. It is a great resource for those new to NLP and hypnosis and for anyone trying to break free from a pesky habit.

At the end of a NLP class with Dr. Pearson six months ago, I purchased this book from her.

Chapter Three "An Overview of NLP" is very concise and clear. Here Dr. Pearson puts NLP's principles together in an actionable way with an exceptional combination of descriptive and economical use of language. I've found it a handy way to introduce others to NLP as well as a quick reference to well-formed outcomes for myself.

Chapter 21 "Define You Life Purpose" brings Dr. Pearson's clinical experience into words. The chapter's start has stuck with me. My take on her writing in this chapter is that 90% of my problems are self-sabotage because there is not something I want enough. With enough desire all my mental sled dogs pull in the same direction. My issues get resolved by my implacable intent.

This book is an excellent introduction for creatively adapting basic hypnosis techniques and neuro-linguistic processes with the goals of replacing undesired habits with helpful ones, negative thinking with a positive attitude, and reducing stress to improve overall health in many ways. I have found a number of patterns and techniques which are helpful, including: responding resourcefully to criticism, improving self-esteem with mirror-work, practicing risk management, and removing fear and anxiety using the imagery of a protective shield. This last method can be very helpful for the many children who are taunted at school, as well as adults who may endure frequent rudeness at work.

The author encourages others to create and record their own hypnosis instructions utilizing some of the many helpful hypnosis and NLP suggestions included in the book. This can readily be done in the comfort of one's home, often without the need to schedule appointments with a therapist or counselor. Many constructive, practical ideas presented here can be readily adapted to an individual situation without great difficulty.

In the final chapter, the author discusses the importance of defining one's life purpose, and how our undesirable habits and behaviors often hide our unacknowledged (unconscious) conflicts, hindering our ability to pursue a purposeful life. As long as we continue worrying and focusing our attention on our habits, addictions, and unpleasant feelings, we may never discover the answer to perhaps the most important question of all: What is my (life) purpose? I was once 100 pounds overweight, and was able to lose the weight without doctors, drugs, or outside help (or exercise, for that matter) I did need, however, to resolve my associated conflicts, including acknowledging, expressing, and processing my related feelings and emotions. Now, I'm finally becoming aware of my life purpose. Honesty and accountability with the self are both crucial here, enabling us to overcome our debilitating conflicts, and allowing ourselves to begin living a purposeful life.

All in all, a very valuable reference, which can be extremely helpful to many. However, this is not a book to be read through once. The techniques must be adapted and practiced, and will prove to be highly effective for resolving and clearing many vexing, frustrating problems and habits. (One of my favorite expressions, a corollary to "Necessity is the mother of invention," is: "Frustration is the mother of creativity") There is hope for solutions to many of life's problems. This book will help show the way.

This book is tremendously helpful in so many ways and to so many people. Habits are key to everything -- to successful careers, relationships, productivity and life in general. What I love most about this book is that it shares the power of NLP, something that is still relatively unknown in the counseling and personal growth domain. I consider this the lay person's resource on NLP. If you don't know what NLP is or how it can help your life, then read this book. The book is easy to read and makes it easy to start applying the concepts instantly. This book has completely changed my life for the better!
