Product Description

Product Description

Written specifically for siblings of children with Tourette Syndrome (TS), "Why Do You Do That?" is an age-appropriate source of information for children and adolescents aged 8 to 16. Uttom Chowdhury and Mary Robertson describe tics and Tourette's in clear, child-friendly terms and provide a simple explanation of the biological causes. Other chapters focus on living with someone who has TS, associated features such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and aggression, and what siblings can do to help. The authors also offer practical tips on how to deal with issues such as problems at school and bullying. This book will prove invaluable for brothers and sisters of children with TS, as well as parents and other family members.

This is the first book that really gets the message across that Tourette Syndrome isn't just about tics. The format enables the reader to choose whether to read medical facts, feelings of the sufferer or opinions of siblings first...and then to put it all together in a truly rounded understanding of this condition.

The attentional, obsessional and compulsive symptoms, along with the mood swings and frustration are all described in an accessible way, which should help dispell the ignorance that abounds about the hidden aspects of Tourette Syndrome in so many classrooms.

I found the poems a little irritating - but then you don't have to read them.

I've already bought a second copy to give to my son's class teacher...and, no doubt, will end up buying many more copies in the future.

I knew nothing of Tourettes till my seven year old grandson was diagnosed with it. I have found this book interesting as I now understand something of his problem.

We bought this book for my 10 year old son with TS. It helped him understand and seemed to give him some comfort in knowing that others have it as well.
