Book Description

Question: What do you get when you take a loyal football fan whose motto is "Sunderland Till I Die, I Know I Am, I'm Sure I Am...", and you throw in an unhealthy obsession with the Internet, running an online fanzine in the hope of becoming a dot-com millionaire, divorce, depression, redundancy, intimidation, paranoia, jealousy, promotion, relegation, and a revised motto of "Sunderland Till I Die, I Know I Am, Well I Think I Am..."?

Answer: This book!

From the Author

Starting from Sunderland's relegation in 1997 to Sunderland's devastating relegation in 2003, "Why Do I Do It", indeed begs the question of "why" when it comes to supporting Sunderland AFC, and the rollercoaster ride of highs and lows it can bring (and more than often, too many lows). And why is so much abuse is thrown at me and my colleagues albeit electronically, from supporters who only agree to disagree with any editorial comments that are made?

"Why Do I Do It?" also asks why, in terms of life, as I unveil some rather personal issues, yet hopefully I've managed to put them across in an ironic and humorous manner, though at times very dark, and sinister-ish!

Asked am I bitter, I'd probably say yes, but also cynical, optimistic and pessimistic if the two can sit side by side, and dare I suggest philosophical.

When asked "Why Do I Do It?", I cannot answer in a single sentence. It is I believe a question football fans across the globe will ask themselves at one time or another, suffering relegation, celebrating success, agony and ecstasy - two opposites and in respect to Sunderland AFC an unfortunate common factor for the last 50 odd years.

What I've put together is a story about myself, but more than just an account of supporting SAFC, I've added my experiences surfing the world wide web, running a fans website, mixed in with a number of key points in my recent life, up's and downs and probably more downs than ups.

Many people relate to it, it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it is honest and open, life with football, life without football, and just life!
