This is an excellent account of various closely related concepts in modern computational neuroscience, communicating to non-mathematical readers key theories such as predictive error signals and the dopamine system, temporal difference theory, cognitive control, neuroeconomics etc, testable in humans using behavioural and neuroimaging methods. As a philosopher observed, this approach hog-ties old philosophical dogmas. Indeed its a valuable antidote to philosophy, and unlike millennia of philosophical effort (including Satre), this approach is making very active progress. Highly recommended.

I'm a fairly bright spark, I've a background in psychology and psychiatry, and this book is fascinating...but difficult! Whilst the title and the cover might indicate a friendly and easygoing intellectual workout, I found the content hard to keep up with. The author's style is bright and engaging, but I think he's just too engrossed in his intelligence to write a popular science style book.

Nevertheless, worth reading even if, like me, you only pick up 10% of his fascinating explanations.

The book is written to persons who are not familiar with science but are interested of things. I guess goal of author and editor has been to write a book that young people get inspiration and they start to think that perhaps science is fun to study. For a person who already knows little bit of this and that some sections of books are a bit slow. From perspective of social science and philosophy some of the claims in book are dubious, but that is not important. The book most likely does what it is ment to; inspire high school students to select something more smart than burger frying. Unfortunately this book was not for me, thou it was written well.
