Product Description

Allmusic Guide

"And Jesu does indeed come off like therapy through sound, as lying under the surface of these bleak dirges lies an elegiac subcurrent than can be as uplifting as the angelic hymns of Sigur Rós. In fact, that Icelandic band's soothing soundscapes can be seen as the yin to Jesu's yang, the light to Jesu's dark, the white angel wings to Jesu's black pits of the underworld."

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Additions!, 15 Sep 2008
By R. Ealom "Rizzo003" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Why Are We Not Perfect (Audio CD)
I already owned the jesu/Eluvium Split EP that these songs come from. I don't know how to really explain the sound here but it's so layered with different sounds. The original EP to me is one of the best split EPs he had came out with and Eluvium topped it off with the shear beauty of his style. This album has an overall feel of loneliness and despair however the melody and texturing is so beautiful it leaves the listener uncomfortable. And it works! The two new alternative tracks are interesting in itself. You can tell Justin Broadrick mainly uses these as a outline and finally introduces the more structured elements and guitars to the final output however these "outlines" hold on their own. This is very electronic in comparison to his previous work but this is a very unique and beautiful side of his music. Don't expect anything heavy here it is somber and extremely calm. Definitely give it a chance, it does not disappoint at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great EP, 19 Nov 2008

This review is from: Why Are We Not Perfect (Audio CD)
By the time i got this ep (i own the split vinyl version) i've already listened to Jesu , Silver(ep), Conqueror and Sun Down/Sun rise(ep). The SD/SR ep was kind of a disappointment to me because it was very similar to conqueror in sound(in fact, it comes with the japanese version), but without the hooks that made me love that album. I thought Jesu would be releasing the same stuff over and over again in the future. So , when this ep was out, i bought it not expecting much, and boy i was wrong. This ep is, in my opinion, the best ep Jesu has released so far ( up to lifeline ). Yeah , it has the sound of conqueror , and some beats that reminded me to Silver (the electronica stuff), but it surely stands on its own.
A previous reviewer encouraged people to pick up the first jesu album only. To this i have to say that you only do that if you want to listen to the heavy stuff he was mentioning. That means , if you are expecting something more like Godflesh. But if you don't have any problem with shoegaze, electronica, some heaviness here and there and some catchy vocals, just give the other releases a try. As for myself , the first Jesu album was good, but i find the new ones to be more inventive.
Well , this ep is really good and i really love the title track. Give it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice little piece of metallic bliss, 29 Mar 2011

I've been a big fan of Justin Broadricks more "metallic" work for years, mainly Godflesh and Jesu. Jesu really draws a line for fans and listeners, the earlier stuff is very heavy metallic pop music, then in the middle of the band's career, Jesu's music became more "chill" and more electronic influenced. Though for me, I love both sides of Jesu. Of course if you ask most "metalheads" what is their favorite Jesu releases, it's all of the earlier stuff, though if you ask most fans of Broadrick's work and people who really do love music (and or hypnotic/post & electronic music), they tend to like Jesu's mid/later releases. So this is one of those EPs which most headbangers won't enjoy. The first track, Farewell, is most likely Jesu's best "pure" electronic song yet. There are guitars of course, just no massive riffs. Though it's very hypnotic and catchy, an awesome song. The second track, Blind and Faithless, isn't that impressive, but it's a nice fuzzed out instrumental. The next song, the title track, I think is one of Jesu's best songs. This is pretty much like a ballad, though very hypnotic and get's rather heavy at the end. It's no "self-titled or Heartache" heavy, but a mesmerizing and massive riff comes in near the end of the song, and it just raises the hair on the back of my neck, absolutely stunning song. The last two tracks are pretty tight alternate versions, their actually a but more "metallic" than the originals, mainly being more guitar based. Overall this a totally blissed out little EP, and is worth checking out.
