5.0 out of 5 stars Why are Manhole Covers Round?, 12 July 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Why Are Manhole Covers Round?: The Renowned Interview Success Guide to Help You Past the Famous Microsoft Interview Question (or Any Other Job Interview You're Facing) (Paperback)
Although I agree with the points in the first part of the book,, the real strength of this book lies in the second half which deals with how to prepare for interviews. Researching the company before the interview is a subject quite rightly Charlie focuses on and from experience it is something MBA students don't research enough. Your background research gives you the opportunity to prove how interested you are in the company. Everyone knows that someone motivated and interested in the company and work will go the extra mile and most probably be more successful than someone who lacks sufficient knowledge or proven interest in the field and industry.
Although not suggesting you ask them all, the author lists some good questions to ask an employer. Including `What is the strategy of the company moving forward?', `Is this a new position or is the current person moving on?' ,`Are there any new services and business areas you are looking into?'
Included in the book is the useful tip of preparing 3 examples for each competency that you may be asked this is to ensure you don't come across as a broken record. Also another top tip is to nail down what your worth is in the market as quite rightly the book states `If you don't know your own worth you can't expect your interviewer to do that for you'. This involves speaking to people in the field doing the same kind of job you want to do and asking them what kind of salary range you might expect - chances are their salary will be hidden somewhere within the range given! And it is more polite than asking them outright what salary they earn outright!
