Product Description

Synopsis

Why do people continually hide their real selves from the people around them? Why are so many so insecure and afraid to open up? The answer, explains this text, is that maturity as people is reached by communicating and interacting with others. The problem this book considers is what happens to our real selves if no one else ever finds out what we are like? This volume explains how to be more emotionally open, and shows how people adopt roles and play psychological games to protect their inner selves. The courage to be our real selves can be developed, the author says, and then we can begin to grow.

From the Back Cover

This book by the author of Why Am I Afraid to Love? contains insights on self-awareness, personal growth and communication with others. Why do people continually hide their real selves from the people around them? Why are so many so insecure and afraid to open up? The answer, explains John Powell, is that maturity is reached by communicating and interacting with others. This book considers the consequences our real self faces if no one else ever finds out what we are like. In this enduring classic, the companion to Why Am I Afraid to Love?, John Powell explains how to be more emotionally open, and shows how people adopt roles and play psychological games to protect their inner selves. The courage to be our real selves can be developed, and then we can begin to grow. Now newly designed for a fresh audience, Why Am I Afraid to Tell You Who I Am? is as relevant as it has been for twenty years. With a proven track record, it continues to speak to the needs and aspirations of people today. It is best included in self help sections of general bookshops, but also has a religious appeal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing insight, 19 Oct 2003
This little book is an absolute gem. An excellent 'beginners' book on the path to happiness and emotional health/strength. I have used it extensively in my therapy practice, I actually give one on loan to clients. They are always so amazed and thankful for it. Being a little book and easy to read, my clients actually read it, even the depressed people. It explains how we play our 'game' of life, how we do or don't really communicate and why we are sometimes afraid of ourselves and the world. It has sold about 15 million or so copies over the years, and I am not surprised at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the richness of authenticity and honesty in life-READ IT, 19 Jan 2003

(REAL NAME)
This book literally changed my life. Reading it has allowed me to understand some important parts of who I am - without being afraid anymore. Now, while there are things I keep private, there is nothing in, or about, my life that I would be embarrassed by people finding out. I recommend this book to all my friends, have loaned it to many, bought it for some and quote it to all. A must read again and again, which is made easy by its' concise and accessible format. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and get this book; maybe even get them a copy - NOW !

4.0 out of 5 stars Personal Growth, 25 Aug 2002
My personal growth has confused me and left me feeling sad and lonely. It has also revealed some of the most beautiful emotions and experiences I could ever of imagined. Then WHY am I feeling so confused ?

This book probably needs to be read two, three or more times but it explains how the 'ego' is behind many of our emotional responses. It also introduces you to the 'masks' and 'roles' that people play so that the never have to confront their 'true selves'.

Its a complex subject explained in an easy and relatively brief way and for me its another part of my learning and personal discovery. Good luck on your own journey.
