Amazon Review

Who's Who In EastEnders is a timely companion volume to the much loved BBC soap currently celebrating 15 years on our screens. Ostensibly a reference book, albeit a bright and colourful one, Who's Who is aimed at fans of Albert Square who have followed a variety of characters over the years. Within a chunky 9" square paperback format, chapters trace the history of the East End dynasties of Beales and Fowlers, Mitchells, Butchers, Di Marcos and more. The lives of all major characters--within the square and onto fictional futures beyond--are condensed into biographies of just a few easy-to-read paragraphs. Sheer volume of information coupled with limited space prevents the author from delving deep into the psyches of her fictional subjects as she did in previous books Tiffany's Secret Diary, Bianca's Secret Diary and EastEnders--Blood Ties: the Life and Loves of Grant Mitchell, but her wide brush strokes nevertheless reveal a plethora of inter-family relationships, loves and grudges long held over the years. A map of Albert Square, complete with current residents' house numbers, and a section devoted to the pets of E20 complete the volume, so if you are brushing up your Eastenders trivia--for fun or for pub quiz prizes--you need never be lost for an answer again. --Helen Lamont

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but then again not. 12 Feb 2001
I give great praise to Kate Lock for not only keeping track of all the family lines (i.e. who married/slept with who) and there is an absolute wealth of photographic material on the cast. However, though the map is nice, some photographs of the buildings would have been helpful. An episode guide and a background on the creation of the show is a huge oversight in this book, espceially for those of us who haven't seen the pre-1990 episodes. Even some bvehind the scenes shots or stories would have been great. Let's hope that for the 20th Anniversary, a much more in depth book can be written.

3.0 out of 5 stars Once it was cleaned up it was ready to read. 30 Sep 2012

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book arrived promptly. However, it needed to be cleaned up before it could be used. I expected it to be in a cleaner condition. The content of this book, after cleaning, was good, and my daughter enjoyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Low Down on England's # 1 Soap Opera 6 April 2003
By Kelly K. Coyle - Published on
Another confession, I am addicted to Eastenders. Why oh why do the Brits make TV sooo much better than we do? What makes Eastenders so great? Well, the main characters aren't a bunch wealthy idiots, in some fictional city at some fictional mega-corporation with too much time on their hands, too much perfect make-up who spend all day making goo-goo eyes at one another. In England, this soap is about the working class, struggling with their jobs at the local pub, the laundrymat, local small gorcery store, the cafe, etc. The women look like REAL women, they use a huge variety of people, you know, like you find in the actual world? Don't get me wrong, there are some very attractive women (and men as well!) on Eastenders, but they don't get all the airtime.
This book is a super look at the past, which always plays a part in the current storyline, and helps new viewers understand some of the undercurrents between many of the characters.
You should check out the show and this great history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous EastEnders Resource! 20 Sep 2002
By Mona Gracen - Published on
This book is a must have for the EastEnders fan. It is very behind the times as far as what is currently going on on the show in Great Britain but it is a bit ahead from where I am in Central New York. Because of that I currently know a little more than I should about what is going to happen - and although that is kind of fun, it's a little disappointing too because I won't be surprised. However, I just loved reading this book - couldn't put it down. It gives you so much information on all "current" characters (at least from where I'm watching - it seems to be current through at least the beginning of 2000) and has a section about all of the old characters too (many of whom I really miss!). Anyway, if you're an EastEnders fan or someone who has just started to watch and is a bit confused, this is a great resource for you! Thoroughly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Eastenders Reference Guide 29 Aug 2001
By Amazon Customer - Published on
This book is a great reference guide for all Eastenders fans. Almost all characters - past and present - are shown in colour photos accompanied by a short character bio. Name of the actor/actress is also given, though there is no info given about the actor/actress. The beginning of the book also has a handy diagram layout of the buildings in Albert Square so you can get a feel for the proximity of the Cafe to the Queen Vic, etc. All character names are listed at the back of the book, along with page numbers for fast look-up. Some bios may contain spoilers depending on how up to date Eastenders is in your viewing area. This book is a very satisfactory guide to Who's Who in Eastenders.

This book is a nice way to get to know the characters for new E.E. fans. I however got it simply as a keepsake. I've been watching this show for the past fifteen years, and I'm hooked on the realness of Albert Square.
