The classic albums series always manages to get into the heads of the artists and to reveal what they were aiming for when recording an album. The 'Who's Next' album is at the same time both Pete Townshend's greatest triumph and his greatest failure.
The songs are all top-notch classic Who songs - that's the triumph. But the only real failure is that Townshend has, by his own admission, failed to get his concept for the 'Lifehouse' album / film project across to anyone outside the band for a great many years.
Townshend has said many times that the project caused him a great deal of personal anguish. However, The Who remember the album's creation here with great affection. The creation of the songs on the album - AND the songs central to the 'Lifehouse' concept that failed to make the album is detailed here, along with contemporary performances, most of which have not ever surfaced elsewhere
Some of the songs are still featured to this day in their live shows and have lost not one iota of their strength or emotion. Highly recommended.

I bought this DVD mainly on the strength of the other review shown here. There are some good moments: Roger, Pete & John's interviews are interesting, as are the the comments from former managers, sound engineers etc. But a few gripes: The stereo sound quality is not great; running time at only just on an hour; only a few songs from "Who's Next" are featured; there's a lot of before & after "Who's Next" stuff - of varying relevance; Pete's extended solo acoustic version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" struck me as purely filler material.
I have a book from a similar "Making Of" series detailing Led Zeppelin's classic Fourth Album, and a whole chapter is devoted to each song; I think I was expecting something more detailed along these lines.
Good...interesting...but could have been a whole lot better.

This particular installment of the brilliant "Classic Albums" series is an absolute must for fans of the Who and especially the amazing "Who's Next" album. Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle are especially engaging interviewees, their reminiscences often funny, sometimes sad and always informative. They are more than ably backed up by Glyn Johns, the album producer, former manager Chris Stamp, biographer and fan Dave Marsh and Keith Altham, among others. The footage of the Who performing some of the songs live is priceless. What amazing power and energy those four guys had at their peak. Definitely one of the greatest rock bands on the planet, ever! Pete's solo performances are also superb, both in the footage from 1971 and in the recordings made especially for this documentary.
