Product Description

Synopsis

In her explosive new book, Breck Hawk exposes how many pregnant women can avoid serious repercussions from the drugs and unnecessary medical interventions that are pushed on them while in labour simply by being aware of their basic patient rights and options. "Hey! Who's Having This Baby Anyway" gives power back to mums-to-be and shows them how they can make themselves be heard! Let's get this right out in the open: pregnant women have rights. They don't suddenly turn into powerless little girls as soon as they get pregnant, who have to be shepherded, controlled and dictated to. Chapters that follow treat various subjects plainly and honestly and keep underscoring the concept of choice. She addresses types of caregivers, medications in labour, natural remedies and complementary methods of pregnancy and labour, homebirth, water birth, birth plans and breastfeeding. Several chapters conclude with helpful workbook pages for those kinesthetic learners who need to "do" to "learn."

I recommend this book to EVERYONE!!! To me, it is a MUST READ if you are planning on having a baby. It is very informative and not bias. It lays out the facts and allows you to make decisions on how you want your child birth experience to be.
Wonderful Book 14 Dec 2010

I have not purchased this book myself, my midwife has lent it to me but I will buy it when I have to return it.

This book has an abundant amount of useful information, for during pregnancy, during recovery and even afterward for breastfeeding. There's a whole chapter on herbs and how they can be used to have a healthy pregnancy, delivery and even a healthy breastfeeding experience. There's a chapter all about epidurals and other pain medications and how they affect birth and the baby. There's an entire chapter on home birth, one on water birth and one on breastfeeding, among other chapters. I have yet to read those but it's next for me.

The book reads well and you could easily read it cover to cover or just skip around to what is relevant. It is definitely a book that you would refer to over and over again for a long time. I'll be buying it very soon.
Wish I would have read this with my first two babies! 1 Dec 2009

I read this before my third baby, who was born through a VBAC. I wish I would have known more about the birthing process, effects of drugs during pregnancy and labor, and the woman's body in general. This book empowered me to make informed decisions for having our third baby. I love it and have bought it for first-time mommies-to-be.
