Product Description

The planet hurtles towards nuclear obliteration because the major powers are either warmongering or in the hands of lunatics (Peter Cook plays the quite insane British Prime Minister). A kidnap attempt on one of the Royal family pushes fingers closer to the red buttons, and the inept, over zealous SAS rescue attempt only helps the cause of the oncoming apocalypse.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: A small British colony is invaded by its Communist neighbour. Newly elected female President of the United States, Barbara Adams, tried to sort out the mess but the British under the leader of PM Sir Mortimer Chris sends in a task force to seize the islands back. For revenge, General Mosquera, leader of the Communist country, hires the best terrorist in the world, Lacrobat, to kidnap the British princess Wendy to hold her to ransom to get the British out. So now Barbara has not only got to deal with Mosquera and Lacrobat, she has also to deal with Sir Mortimer, who totally goes mad and thinks up really stupid ideas (such as pushing the unemployed over a cliff and that the entire employment problem is caused by evil pixies.) but also with the fact that Russia is looking to aid the Communist country and this could start World War III... ...Whoops Apocalypse

5.0 out of 5 stars Small Known Classic 20 Feb 2001
Format:VHS Tape
If I am correct this is the spin off film of the T.V. series of the same name, which I have not seen. The film though is hilarious. Although reviewed as mediocre at best by the press this is simply undeserving. The plot of the film centres around a send up of the Falklands war and the characters involved, which invludes, amongst others, Naval Officers, the Prime Minister and a Russian Spy, expertly played by Alexei Sayle, fronting a nuclear missile silo as a hotel resort. Although partly satirical in content the film is as much a slapstick affair as any, with the Prime Minister (Peter Cook) going insane and cutting unemployment by having employed people jump off the White Cliffs of Dover in order to create more jobs and risking nuclear war with Russia because he is under the belief that Britons will be protected from the nuclear blast by Union Flag motifed umbrellas. Although Cook is superb as the increasingly lunatic man in charge, the S.A.S. officer played by Rik Mayall steals the show in a side splitting end sequence that parodies the Iranian Embassy siege of 1980. Possibly not shown on T.V. too much anymore due to a character that is meant to be the then Princess of Wales in full S&M bondage dress, video is probably the only way to see this home made classic. Well worth it time after time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unemployment is caused by pixies! 25 Oct 2005
Format:DVD
Whoops Apocalypse is a cosistantly funny parody; with some great performances; in particular Peter Cook as Sir Mortimer Chris, the barmy Prime Minister. I found the sequence of him reducing unemployment by getting people to jump off a cliff funny.

Many say that compared to the TV show this is a come down, which I have to agree on. Michael Richards is good, but he can't outdo John Cleese's Lacrobat. It also recycles some jokes from the show; especially with the news reports. But on its own merit, this film is still very funny film. If nothing else its worth watching for the SAS scene, and a great theme song playing over the end credits. Also the chances of the TV series being re-released look very slim, so we may need to make do with this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must if you remember the Falklands Conflict. 28 Oct 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I remembered this from years ago, when my older brother had it on VHS, and after reminiscing over a few scenes on youtube, I was convinced I needed it in my collection again. I was not disappointed: it is funnier than I had remembered it, probably because a few of the gags that passed me by when I was younger now made sense.

Peter Cook was born to play the role of Sir Mortimer Chris. Rik Mayall's SAS Sergeant is just hilarious - I know they frequently use this clip at the Army School of Ammunition. The remainder of the cast is like an A-Z of quality actors and comedians: Michael Richards, Loretta Swit, Herbert Lom, Alexei Sayle, Ian Richardson, to name but a few of the familiar faces.

If you remember the Falklands Crisis or grew up in the Cold War era, this is a must watch.

I cannot believe how bad this film is. Given the talent involved, I hope someone is very embarrassed by it. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Weak and embarrasing
Great comic actors wasted on some pitifully weak material. The SAS sequence is quite funny, but you might as well watch that on youtube and forget the rest.
