Product Description

Product Description
The author of this book played a major part in the FBI's development of psychological profiles for serial killers, he even invented the term "serial killer". Whilst Thomas Harris made Ressler's work famous in fiction, Ressler did it for real. His work in the Behavioural Science Unit led him to meet some of the most notorious criminals of the 20th century - Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy and many more. In this book, Ressler describes the process of catching these men.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic read for any would-be crime psychologists, 2 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This was my first encounter with the motive behind crime and it certainly encouraged me to read more. Ressler deals with the subject matter in such a unique way that putting the book down gets increasingly more difficult as the book progresses. I found his accounts not only extremely fascinating, but also informative and relevant to the subject matter. This is not just an account of the criminals that Ressler has dealt with, he also takes the time to sum up his own feelings as to why these crimes were committed in the way they were. It is this which makes the book unique.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as he says he is?, 2 Feb 2009
By Phogey (England) - See all my reviews
An interesting read, although it became a little tedious & predictable because Mr Ressler apparently never made a mistake? However one big mistake is his "involvement" in the "Yorkshire Ripper" case.

He claims that he made an accurate profile of the Ripper and advised British Police the tapes & letters were a hoax - possibly true. However he then goes on to claim that subsequently the hoaxer proved to be a disaffected former police officer!

As his book was published in 1992 and the hoaxer - a labourer - was not identified until 2005 it appears Mr Ressler somewhat overstated his foresight? Which leads me to ask - how much more of his incredible talent is actually exagerrated? In my experience if an non-fiction author gets significant facts wrong then the whole basis of the narrative about his subject becomes questionable.
