It's been three years since the ode to historic failure that was 'Elegies to Lessons Learned' from I Like Trains. They have turned their attention from the past to the future, and in their eyes there is impending doom ahead, and their is not a lot we can do to stop it. The album artwork sums up the state of play, simple, uncluttered, but leaves an impression nonetheless.

This is not to say the album is depressing, singer Dave Martin's baritone suits his thoughtful analysis of a future world that has little to offer, and the album is more open ended than Elegies.

There are elements of Sigur Ros in the shimmering guitars and minimalist style of some tracks, Martin's deep and mournful vocals have will draw likenings to those of Tom Smith of Editors or Ian Curtis, but without the oversimplistic lyrics of the former or the autobiographical candour of the latter.

Anyone who makes the effort to listen to the tracks repeatedly will find plenty to enjoy, although singles Sea of Regret (which appeared on an closing credits of an episode of CSI Miami) and A Father's Son have a more instant appeal.

This is an album that deserves to be listened to by anyone with a brain, by a band that is the antithesis of the embarrassing drivel that passes for music today in Simon Cowell's Britain.

To a certain extent they are an excellent band in search of a definitive audience, too intelligent for pop, not cliched enough to be a cult, not in a hurry to be and the album is something to immerse and relax yourself in like a steaming hot bath at the end of a tiring day.

better than trams... 30 Oct 2010

A masterpiece of a return..You know what you are going to get with ILT,a bit Mogwai,a bit Sigur Ros,a bit Tindersticks, much of the same as before but a bigger sound this time!!.Ok,for the majority of our UK population this will be deemed far too dark and bleak[it actually isnt].Vocally beautiful, musically epic and with lyrics which tug at the heartstrings.ILT craft the most hauntingly gorgeous melodies. After four listens it grabs me as their best work yet but that conclusion is drawn from the interpretation that this album is more expansive than previous work.I am a huge admirer of all ILT work and this album adds handsomely to their already impressive catalogue. Its incredibly English and "Sea of Regrets" is possibly the best track ILT have written thus far. This album and this band will never get the critical acclaim they fully deserve but i am so glad they are part of my life.I saw them in Manchester last Tuesday and well...died and gone to heaven is a fitting tribute to that performance!!!

Well what can i say? This album is one of the most frustrating i have ever purchased. On first listen i found it a little difficult with the vocals not as deep, gravelly and gutteral, however, SIRENS and DIVORCE BEFORE MARRIAGE were instantly appealing. ( DIVORCE BEFORE MARRIAGE being one of my fave ever ILT tracks now, it is simply superb. It really makes you ponder about anything and everything ). It starts slowly and builds into a crescendo of brilliance. The other tracks i thought were fairly average if not disappointing. After listening to the album over and over again whilst decorating, my opinion changed. I became absorbed by the fluctuations in tempo and lyrics and loved it. I was disappointed by ELEGIES which in my opinion harboured three excellent tracks with the rest of no interest to me whatsoever. I was disturbed at how poor THE CHRISTMAS TREE SHIP was but i kept the faith and bought HWSTD and i was rewarded. Lets not mess about here, this is intelligent music for intelligent people and it beggars belief that music of this quality can never be seen or heard mainstream yet moronic manufactured tripe that masquerades as chart music can rake in millions for vacuous, talentless sheep who can't even sing never mind play instruments. Quality is out there, you must seek it. I found ILT and they have given me an abundance of riches. THANKYOU!!
